ABSTRACT: In view of the shortage of reliable pasteurizers on farms, a mobile unit
is suggested far farms contaminated with various cattle diseases. A 300-liter VDP-
300 vat for prolonged mM pasteurization is mounted on a GAZ-704 trailer. Tests A

Abstract: Pigs 4 mos o~4 were irradiated with 200 kv X-rays,
;r- rays from a 1000 cu~) Co source, and 1?.3 mev electrons. The
doses used for each type of radiation were Identic#l, i.e., 1300,
1800, and 2200 rad. The biological effeotivenesstif the radiation
was determined on the basis of the cutaneous reae on according
to F. Waehsmann, Strahlenth. 76, 26o, 1947. The r4sults indicated
that the action of high-energy radiation was weakei, than that of
the X-rays. With increasing doses of radiation, the difference
in biological action due to the relative energy of the radiation
increased. (Graphs, 28 references (1 Bulgarian, 1 USSR, 26

Abstract: The author discusses the stimulative effect of cortisole on
the Langerhans islands in normal guinea pigs and the possibility of
hyperplasia in guinea pigs with atrophied exoorino pancreas for purposes
of determining from which elements of tho exocrine pancreas new insular
tissue may develop. A historical introduction reviews present-day
Imowledge of the function of the insular apparatus and the relations be-
tween the glucocorticoida and the insular system. The author's oxpori-
ments showed that cortisolo can powerfully stimulate the insular system
of the pancreas with only slight hyperglyoemia in guinea pigs with normal
exocrine pancreasq but that cortisole in guinea pigs with atrophied
exocrine pancreas causes only a mild hypergluoomio reaction without uny
change in gluoono toloranco.

Title Some Observations in Connection with the Preparation of
Tetrahydropyran from Furfurol.

Abstract Tetrahydropyran (I) was obtained from furfurol, over fur-
furyl alcohol (II), tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (III) and
dihydropyran (IV). Hydrogenation of furfurol in the li-
quid phase took place in two stages: first at 150-1750
and 100 atmospheres, II was obtained, then at 1500 and
100 atmospheres, over a Ni-catalyst, III was formed.
Conversion of III to IV took place in the liquid phase at
3500, with white bauxite from Rovinlye serving as the ca-
talyst. The IV thus obtained had a BP 860, d,~O 0.920,

Abstract: Influence of a dose of 700 r of ganna radiation on the
metabolism of 'i-lycosides in the blood and in the MSCIO tissue
of pigs Was investigated. In pigs that received a lethal whole-
body dose of irradiation, glycoside metabolism is disturbed; this
results in the upset of' the balance between glucose and lactic

acid in the blood, and glycogen in the liver. The limitation of

Abstract: The pigs were bjected to whole-body radiation with 450, 700, and
1000 r by gamma rays of 6~'O. Radiation sickness with serious clinical aspects

developed after radiation with 700 r. The maximum development of the clinical
aspects of the disease appeared in the 2nd and 3rd week after radiation. This
was also the period during which most of the animals died. The clinical aspect
of the sickness was characterized mainly by a hemorrhagic diathesis, changes
