ABSTRACT: This is the conclusion of a paper bearing the same title and
written by the same authors (RzhMekh, 1.955, abst.-act 3157).
Following a rise in the headwater level to 50 cm above the normal
design level, observations afforded a more accurate picture of the
seepage through the foundation of the dam: measures for the im-
provement of its operation are outlined. Varioua problems of the
stability of the dam and various asprects of the seepage and the
hydrochemical and hydrothermal comportment of the dam, as well
as the mechanical piping, are examined.

Operation of an Alluvial Dam in Complex Hydrogeological Condition
The authors describe the ~qdrogeological conditions of an earth dam
constructed in a region formerly covered by ice. The dam under discus-
sion is limited in height to 17 meters. The authors discuss the filtra-
tion regime in the body and foundation of the dam during 11 years of use
and describe the additional drainage measures which were necessitated by

ABSTRACT ',:- The proposed system is based on the principle of quant-
izing the signal (pulse) by means of a regenerative circuit,
in which the number of.the stable states is equal to tat of
the analyser chann 1s. The system consists of a'pulse-length-
ening circuit, a deflection amplifier, a quantizing cathode-ray
tube, an output amplifier, a gate generator, a storage tube
with a gate generator and a time base, and an adding circuit.

schematic is shown. An experimental analyzer of this type was
constructed; it had 25 channels and its quantizing time was
about 0.5 jisec.

based on the circuit described by Fairstein (Ref.3) and its

this unit is based on a cathode coupled circuit, while the
Dhase inverter consists of one tube with anode and cathode
resistances. The Dulses are formed after the inverter by
means of RO networics or by a short circuited delay line
(.5 it see duration). Tile final amplifier consists of 5
tubes; tile fir3b 3 form a "triple" and are provided with a
negative feedback; tile 4tIl tube operatei as a cathode

follower. The output signal of tEle amplifier is applied to
an external pu-i3e analys er and to the discriminator of the
device. The discriminati -on level can be varied from 5 to
105 V in steps of 1 V; the voltage divider circuit is shoim
in Fig.2. Tlhe instrument is designed for the operationwith
a scintil~atiun counter. The maximura gain of tile amplifier
is 2 x 10 and the effective noise amplitude at tile output
of the amplifier is less than .04 V. The pulse rise time is
.15 ~t s and the pulse duration is: a) 2, 5, 10 or 20 Ii s if
RC networks are used, and b) 1 ji s if a delay line is used.
The overloading coefficient of the amplifier is over 100.

TITLE: A Counting Instrument Employing Dekatrons (Pereschetnyy

ABSTRACT: Since a dekatron is a comparatively new device and since
its parameters depend to a large extent on the trigger cir-
cuit employQd to effect the transfer from one cathode to
the next , a-A.ptailed investigation of the triggering methods
was carried out. The authors tried a number of triggering
circuits and found that the most successful one was that em-
ploying a double triode in which one of the anodes was pro-
vided with a>-,delay capacitance; the circuit is shown in
Fig.le. The.dekatron employed was of the type 10ISGlS and
had 2 systems of guide electrodes. The actual counter (see
the diagram of Fig.5) consisted of the following elements:
1) a binary eounting decade based on vacuum tubes, 2) 4 count-
ing decades based on dekatrons, 3) a timer, 4) a circuit for
controllin6 the time:o and the input gate circuit, 5) a gating
circuit, 6) aii'intensity meter, 7) a quartz crystal calibra-

A Counting Instrument,..'R.111ploying Dekatrons
The operation of the equipment is as follows. An input pulse
is applied to 'the gating circuit which is in the form of a
univibrator; the,,circuit can be blocked by the bi-stable
device which '_~d-~_controls the timer. The pulses from the
anode of the gating univibrator axe applied to the binary
decade. The output from the decade is used tc trigger the
first dekatron, which in turn drives the following dekatrons.
The counting can be stopped automatically after a pre-set
time interval which is determined by the timer. The baeic
time intervals are-~,,S, 6 and 15 see-, by employing 2 de6-.a-
trons it is also possible to obtain counting intervals of
609 150, 300, 600 and 1500 see. The average counting rate
is recorded by the intensity meter which is carble of
measuring the rates ranging from 200 to 5 x 10 pulses per
minute. The instrument can be checked by employing the quartz

crystal oscillator which operates at 75 kc/s. The device
has a resolving time of 12 Ila. The authors express their

The arrangement described in Ref 1 uses special beam-
deflection valves. The present circuit, Fig 1, contains
only standard pentodes 6P 15 P. Until the arrival of
the gate pulse at the grid Of J12 the anode current of Al
flows through 421 i11+ and Ra. If a signal should
arrive at the grid of J11 the increase in anode current
does not evoke a change 'in output voltage since the anode
of A2 is effectively earthed via the capacitance of
0 25pf. There is no direct transmission through the
f;edback path R-L, R21 C1 since the output resistance of
the cathode follower A 51 /16 is small. When a gate
pulse is applied the anbde current of A 1 switches from
-A?- to J1 3 - If at the same timea signal pulse arrives
then Al works as an anode follower. The circuit passes

"AMA-30" (AMA-3s) type automated multi-channel amplitude analyzer with an electro-
static storage tube as memory device. This model was exhibited at the Geneva
Exhibition in 1958. It possesses the following technical data: number of cvannels
128; capacity of each channel - 216, resolving time 0.5 + 22 Psec (n . channql
.number). The results are read on the monitor screen in the form of binary numbers
or as histogram. The analyzer can operate with external control pulses (under
coincidence or anticoincidence conditions). The number of tubes is 130, power

coincidence circuits of the scintillation counters

TEM The authors have designed and tested a single channel
differential discriminator for work with fast coincidences circuits
employing slow scintillators. In order to eliminate the effect of
the build-up time of the investigated pulse on the resolution time
of the coincidence circuit, a saturated amplifier has been used as
described earlier by G. P, Mellnikov (Ref.It PTE, 1959, NO-5, 61).
In this arrangement the investigated impulse is fed simultaneously
to the input of the expander and to the saturated amplifier. The
latter is stable under overload conditions,, The signal emerging
from the saturated amplifier triggers the Schmidt trigger circuit
which in turn sends an impulse via the cathode follower into the V41"
delay and pulse shaping lines, where it is shaped into a short
pulse corresponding to the leading edge of the saturated pulse. The

length of the delay is chosen to match the scintillatiLon time of
the phosphors. A detailed circuit is given in Fig.1; which shows

- With the
working parameters given, the threshold of the discriminator may
vary from 5 -- 105 V; the width of the window is adjustable in I V
steps from 1 - 10 V. and then to 14, 16. and 20 V. The threshold
value and the window width were found to remain stable to within 1%,
after 8 - 10 hours of work, The dead time of the instrument (for
a given case) was approximately 311sec. The duration of the output
pulses measured at half peak, were estimated as 0.1 paec, and their
amplitude was 5 V (for both polarities). When the amplitude of
the investigated pulses increased from 5 to 125 Vo the time 8 spread
of the centroids of the output pulses was less than 5 x 10- sec.

ABSTRACT: Earlier papers (Refs 1 and 2) had shown that the chromatic ab-
erration field may be corrected by an appropriate choice cZ
current strength and voltage in the electron microscope lenses.
The present paper deals with the investigation of the chromatic
aberration field of an electron microscope, in which the axes
of the lenses are individually displaced with respect to one
another. Formulas (1) give the displacement of the image of
any arbitrary object point by a change in the accelerating
voltage by 81J. Formula (2) serves for the determination of
the section of the total chromatic aberration field in the ax-
lal optical system, and formula (3) the same for nonaxial op-
'tical systems. In the case of electron microscopes with high
resolving power, however, chromatio aberration is very slight,

1122 (1063)) that the ultimate resolution of an electr S mi can be improved
only by reducing the spherical error or increasing the accelerating potential. In
the present paper the authors use the methods and results of their earlier paper to
calculate the effects of axial astigmatism, def6cusing, and chromatic error on the
Imago contrast nnd resolution of an electron microscope. Tho results are prosonted
graphically and in tabular form and are discussed. It is found that imago contrast
deteriorates more rapidly than resolving power with increasing axial astigmatism or
