ABSTRACT: An apparatus for the measuring of the thickness of coatings
on ferromagnetic materials has been designed. The universal
scale (Fig) consists of a Jbxker Inumber of individual scales
mounted radially. Each scale is provfded for an individual
material with certain magnetic properties. When the scales
were graduated some functional relations were observed which
made it possible to design the apparatus under discussion.
It consists, basically, of a lever on which there are a
solenoid and a spiral spring. The upper end of the spring
has certain positions on the universal ticale which, however,
can be curved right and leftg whereby the values necessary
to calculate the thickness of the coatings are found. A
description of the method of determination with various data

TEXT: A circuit description is given of an instrument for measur-
ing the thickness of coatings. The instrument is based on the mag-
nitude of force under which the electromagnet is attracted towards
the coated side of component. The instrument has a universal scale
which represents an infinite number of individual scales intercon-
nected in parallel and printed on a drum. This arrangement permits
the measuring of the thickness of the coating on components of var-
ious magnetic properties. Before the measurements of a given type
of component, the instru.'ment is set for the parting of the electro-
magnet with the non-coated side of the component which determines

ABSTRACT: The study deals'with the effect of acid concentration and nature of
the extractant on distributicn of titanium and zireonkim in the system sulfuric
acid-organic solvent. The following organic solvents were used~ n-butyl, isobu-
tyl, n-amyl, isoamyl, hoxyl, heptyl, octyl,. a'M benzyl alcohol, dietheyl ether,
isobutyl, Asoamyl and amyl aretat4:,, tributylphosphate, mothylethylke tone and
acetophenone. Distribution of titanium and zirconium in the system was studied
with a measuring cylinder containhig a sulfuric acid solution of either metal, Buln
furic acid of another concentration and the organic extractant, all In menaured
amounts. The container was shaken for 15 minutes, then the equilibrium phases

separated and the metal content was determined chemically or by photometry.
Titers of the s0lutions were-dctermined grav! metrically. The distribution- coefff
cient of titanium and zirconium was found to increase with an increase in initial
sulfuric acid concentration. Under the same conditions titanium was extracted
more easily tharL zirconium. E xtraction decreased to almost zero upon passing
from alcohols to ethers. For normal alcohols extractive ability Increased '%vith
increasing dielectric penetrability, It was found that a 5011/osolution of tributyl-
phosphate in carbon tetrachloride would extract titanium and zirconium almost

TEXT: It is noted that an infinitely long liquid cylinder
has been shown to be stable with respect to transverse oscillations
and also with respect to longitudinal oscillations when the
compressibIlity is taken into account. Moreover, the presence of
a magnetic field in the direction of the cylinder enhandes the
stabili:ty with respect to transverse oscillatiods. In the case of
a uniform field, the cylinder also'remains stable with respect to
asymmetric oscillations. However, it is pointed out that it would,
be useful to re-examine this problem by deriving directly t~e
dispersion equation for this case and examining its consequence.
This is done in the present paper, assuming that the uniform
magnetic field is directed along the axis of the cylinder, the
medium is incompressible. and its electrical conductivity infinitely
