TITLE: Lubricating Technique Today

TEXT: The author describes in general properties of lubricants used in
rockets, inter-continental mussiles, jet aircraft and engines operating at high
temperature. The surface of a super-sonic aircraft during flight heats up to 130
- 5300C Presenting a lubricating problem. New types of lubricant are needed. The
most important lubricants are based on various types of silicons. Silicon lubri-
cants have the best lubricating properties, e.g. low steam tension, resistance to
high temperature, good viscosity, indifferent to changes in temperature, they do not
corrode and may be used as shock and heat absorbing liquid. A higher class of 1U_
bricant used in aircraft are the so-called esters of aromatic acid. Practical ap-
plication of pbenylbicarboxyl acid esters gave good results, as this type of lubri-
cant is not affected by hydrolysis, has low steam tension and does not yield to
pyrolyses at 3200C. This type of lubricant has a temperature range of from minus
130 to plus 6500C.

TEXT. Emitters from an Ag-Mg (Ag 98%, Mg 2%) alloy with a coefficient of
secondary emission of about 4, working at a 100 -' 150 V voltagej are used In the
two last stages of the photomultiplier'developed in the Przemysl Institute.of
Electronics (Poland). The activation of the emi ters Is bdsed on the formation
of a magnesium oxide surface layer-of jo-5 - lo- cm thickness. The maximum
values for the coefficient of seconda~ry emission is attained by oxidation of an
Ag-Mg alloy in steam atmosphere. Carves are given which characterize the activa-
-tion process and are taken under thoroughly controlled conditions In which the I
influence of side factors was excluded by preliminary-washing and protracted heatr'.7

the author calculated the distribution of unimolecular decomposition pro-
ducts of irradiated methane and ethane, and G-values for the methane pro-
ducts. The time interval used in the calculations was the average time
between gas molecule collisions at atmospheric pressure 10-10 see. The
activation energies of the possible unimolecular reactions were estimated
from appearance potentials or thermochemical calculations as given by
P.N. Field and J.L. Franklin and M. Krauss, A.L. Wahrhaftig and H. Eyring./

indicating that bimolecular ion-molecule reactions complicate the distri-
bution obtained from experimental mass spectra.. The author now assumes
that primary products undergo bimolecular reactions in collisions with
molecules of the parent substance, and that these reactions occur at
every ion-molecule collisiono It is shown that, taking this into accountq
the ion ration CH +/C H+ CH+ ' H+, and C H+/C H+ calculated for methane

considered; the reaction of free radicals with the methane mayq however,
be neglected. From all the possible reactions, the results were calcu-

et al. J.A. Kerr and A.F. Trotman-Dickenson and K.J. Ivin and E.W. R.
Steacie were employed in the calculations. Comparison with the experimen-
tal results is difficult due to the differences of methods and dependence
of the degree of conversion of the-parent substance. The results of G.J.
Mains and A.S. Newton were used and the relative G-values were compared
with the relative experimental yields of the appropriate products. Good
agreement is obtained, supporting the method of radiolysis proposed by the
author, and indicating the possible value of the quasi-equilibrium theory.
