The novel features of the'equIpment are the high-pressure piezometer and miniature needle valve. A piezometer described by M. Benedict (Ref.l: J. Amer. Chem. Soc.1 1937, Vol.59, 22,24) suffers from*& number-of practical disadvantages from which-the present equipment-in free. The main parts of the present author's piezometer are a th-ick-walled bulb 90-mm long, 8 mm internal diameter and*16-m external diameter. It screws on to a head which carries a capillary tube with a high- pressure needle valve. The poodle valve, illustrated in Fig.2, has a steel needle 1, a sealing mut 2 and a gland consisting of Card 1/5' A piezometer-for-determining the 3/120/61/000/003/025/041 three wetwl riugw,- offe, of coppar--3, !k-n4 two of steel 4. The steel needle in ground to fit-th*-inner d-tametvr of the gland. The shank at the head of the needle in-threaded to fit the threaded internal diameter of the sealing nut, The outer surfaces of the gland rings are a ground fit in the-;asing. Tests made with nitrogen at a pressure of 4.2 tons/cm2-and at room temperature, and at 3.5 tons/cm2-and tsmperatur*~of 400 oC, gave satisfactory results. Still higher values could-no doubt be obtained if other grades of heat-resisting steel were*uswd in the construction. The volume of the piezometer is aborut.5 at; it was carefully calibrated with carbon tetrachloride. In carrying out tests the piezometer is contained in a hollow copper-block which is within a 300 W heat-Ing furnace. For purposes'of weighing, the piezometer is suspended by a wire from the arm of an analytical balance which is an a bench above the furnace. The piezometer can thus be weighed without withdrawing it from the furnace. The arrangements that are made to fill the piezometer with clean San and to measure the pressure on a standard manometer call for no comment. The following formula in used to calculate the change in volume Card 2/.f A piezometer for determining the 4/12o/61/000/003/025/041 E194/IE155 of the piexom*t*r due to thermal expansions V im v -(1-+ 3.25 x 105t * 2.85 x .10-8 t2 _1.65 x lo-l1t3 t 0 An expression in also given for the change in volume due to pressure but when this was checked experimentally by a procedure which In described it was found to be in error. This can be seen- from the curve of FIS-5, whore the volume change agr a function of pressure at temperatures of 21, go and '1417 *C in plotted in tons/cU2 as curve a. Curve b corresponds to'the formula used, which in evidently inaccurate. The toat procedure in as follows. The piezometer in theiv, disconnected from the high- pressure gas supply with the needle'valve'elosed-and-is weighed. The gas is, then rwleaxed'and it in, we-ighed -again. These solutions were decolorized by air and by docomposition with waier or alcohol,, but there was no hydrogen evolution. The relatively high affinity of phenylbarene for electrons was confIrmed by polarographic reduction and by absence of fine structures in tho EP11 spectra. The disubstituted barene 1,3-bis-(pl~ienylbarenyl)propane reacts:' similarly with potassium. Formation of stable anion radicals of th e barene series is indicated, Vinylbarene reacts to form deeply colorod diamagnetic solutions$ apparently due to formation of tho (ILTier dianion.1, The authors thank Yu. 14, Bubnov and V. It was found that esteramidev of phosphoric acid react with acetic anhydride to form mixed anhydrides. It was shown that dial)Wlacetyl- phosphites phosphorylate pr1nary3, secondary,, and tertiary alcohols, glycolsj,~ ,and phenols in the presence of tertiary &mines or dial1qlamides of dial~yj- phosphorus acid at room temperature. Bilibin, Biomitsin (Biomycin), Medgriz, Moscow, 1956j, PP 19T-T557~ This work states on the basis of previously published work that biomy. cin used in the same dosage and employing the same method of introduction is the more effective the earlier its administration is begun, and is more effective in acute than in chronic forms of disease. It discusses the Comparative effectiveness of biomycin in several infectious diseases, and ~lists ccnditions necessary to produce a good therapeutic effect with any ..antibiotic. Th-, article bxief.%r reviews the hIst3y (from 1941) of clinical therapy of -infectious Luseases vita antiDacterial preparations combined with vac- cines and blood transfution, and a -combination of chemotherapy (sulfanilamide') .and vaccines. Wlith the mayenz ox biomycin, a study was Initiated to expanu ..its therapeutic activity by combining it with vaccine therapy in the treat- ment of chronic dysentery and brucellosis. The author considers V. L. Troytski.y's "method of chemotherapy and immunotherapy" erroneous., and dis- Cusses the concept of immunity and the effects desired on introduction of a vaccine. 1360 tante of various local 'and general reactions) the results of (,Yiving a vaccine time after time in a regular .,pattern, and the value of ant -igenic irritation of tne organism and its :-:-Component parts. Tile author describes testing (under the direction of the author's clinic-).' the combined action of biomycin and vaccine on brucellosis and chronic dysentery patients. Reference is made to work of A. M. Yartseva in connec- Uon wit:i bruce1jusis. Sixty patients with chronic dysenzery who had prevJ-- ously undergone unsuccessful therapy with a number of preparations were given- blomycin combined with Chernokhvostov vaccine. The article gives the dura-,.- ~tlon of the disease and the clinical pic-1-ire in most of tiIe cases. It in- C.ludes schedules and dosages of biomycin and the vaccine and discusses re- ,sults. It is corcluded, on the basis of the results presented, t,.at the i1se combined biomycin and vaccine therapy in chronic dysentery ir theoretically and practically feasible. The author considers the combinazion be more effective than either preparation alone.
