AMORs, TI = Production of titanium tr1ohlorlde 33437 S/063/6Z/007/001/003/003 A057/A126 pERIODICAL.- Zhurnal vsesoyuznogo khimicheakogo obshahaszva Imeni D. 1. Mendele- yeva, v. 7, no. 1. 1962, 119 - 120 TM- A method for the preparation of cr-Istalline titanium trichloride on pilot plant, or industrial scale is described. 1.1he process can be carried out periodically, or continuously by reducing titanium tetrachloride with magnesium, sodium, potassium metal, or titanium wastes. The latter are most convenient, since no side products are formed. An apparatus of 1X18H9T (lXhl8N9T) stain- less steel was used In present, case and 99.0 - 99.5% grade TIC13 obtained (im- purities were iron, and oxygen). The titanium wastes (oxidized sponge, shavings, or titanium powder) were tabletted, dried at 100 - 120oC and filled into the re- actor. The latter Is then connected to the container with titanium tetrachloride and to the condenser. The whole system is kept hermetically sealed and dry argon blown through. The reactor is heated to 7000C and TIC'4 added slowly- pressure and temperature must be controlled, since in the begInning the reaction occurs BIRYUKOVA, L.V.; NEROSLAVSKAYA, L.L. NaCip magnesium chloride, barium chloride Ti ABSTRACT- The degree of oxidation of titanium surface under various conditions has been studied. Special attention was given to the pre-i paration of samples. The results of investigation showed that the corrosion rate depends largely upon the temperature and the length of its exposure to the air. The dependence of titanium corrosion- upon the dvration of its exposure to hydrochloric acid solutions at intervals between 1 and 24 hours, using various concentrations, has been investigated. It was found that titanium dissolved even at con- centra.tions of 0.~% HC1; however, the dissolution is very slow.4 The Card 1/2 L 18419-63 - ------- ACCESSION NR: AP3oo56O0 dissolution rate increases noticeably at concentrations of 3 to 6% ECi and at 7%HCI;, it shows vsharp increase. It was shown that tempera- ; , - ture areatly effects the titanium dissolution rate in solutions of I i to 10,% HC1. The most aggressive acid was found to be H so then HC11 2 40 and finally ENO The solubility of titanium in organic acids such as' 3 acetic and formic is very slow. CaCl and BaCl solutions at room 2 2 temperature showed a great effect on titanium corrosion. KC1 and NaCl in acid solutions did not show an effect on titanium. However" MgC1,,, BaCl2and CaCl 2 increased corrosion considerably. Orig. art. has j tables and 4 figures. Cl. perfringens is best denatured by adding two doses of 0. 3 and 0. 216 formaline at 24 -hr- intervals, while maintaining the pH Z5~1-11-47f- 1/2 L 05134-67 ACC NR- AP6031134 of the medium between 7. 2"7. 4, and the temperature at 38C. Detoxification takes seven to ten days under these conditions. The antitoxin- fixing activity of the toxiod obtained fluctuates between 4 and 8 EC with the native toxin titer being 400-800 Dlm/ml. The best procedure for denaturation of Cl. oedematiens toxin is addition of 0. 4% Formalin. A tempellature of 38C is maintained for two days, followed by storage at room teriiperaturi.- for 5-7 days. Toxoids with antitoxin- fixing activities of 70- -120 EC and a native toxin activity of 15, 000- - 22, 000 Dlm /ml were obtained. The CL septicum wis denatured with minimum loss of antitoxin- fixing properties by the addition of two consecutive doses of 0. 15 and 0. 176 Formalin, at 38C for two days with subsequeiii storage at room temperature for 5-7 days. The resulting Aoxoids haVe an activity of 2--4 EC with native toxin titers of 200-400 DIm/ml. I., Head of the Central Laboratory of the Plant Mentioned Belowq jjrvukova, V. N., Head of the Metallographio Laboratory of the Same Pl"afft' TITLE: On GOST for Methods of Determining the Grain Size in Steel (0 GOSTe na metody opredelaniya veliohiny zerna v stali) FERIODICALs Zavodskaya Laboratoriya, 1959, Vol 25, Nr 49 PP501-502 (USSR) ABSTRAM According to GOST 5639-51 the size of austenite and actual steel grains Is determined by the cementation and oxidation methodog and both methods are considered to be equally effecti'm. Practice shows, howeverv that in some cases the two methods may yield completely different sizes of cementation grain. This fact was, in the case under review, studied on steel "amples of the grade 20KhKX, and it was found that the grain obtained by the cementation method (Fig a) was considerably larger than that obtained by the oxidation method (Pig b). Since this difference cannot always be observed it is assumed that grains of equal size are obtained only in the oasa of steels whi--h exhitit only a slight tendency for the austenite grain to grow when the steel is heated to temper- atures above the critical interval. For this reason it is Card V2 On GOST for Methods of Determining the Grain Size in Steel SOY/32-25-4-60/71 recommended to lengthen the oxidation time from 3 to 6-8 hours to make sure that the results obtained by both methods are identic-al. In the GOST the number of sample surfaces to be studied is not given, a matter which should be decided. Final rules governiLg the determination of the grain sizes of hype"utectoid and ledeburit steals will also be required, as well as standardization of the heating temperature for steels suitable far oonstruetionst which according to Geller (Ref 3) ought to be 800-8,100 for hypereuteotoid steels ITIO, U*13, F and Vi, 820-8300 for steels Kh05t ShKh6, and KhV5, 850-860~ for steels Kh, Kh09, 9Kh9 85W, and KhG. Moreover, JJA wauld be ne,iessary to include in the GOST standards a serles of other steel types. TheTe are 2 figures and 3 Soviet re fe ra nf.~ e s.
