iABSTRACT: Research on the effect of antibiotics on the anaerobic
bacteria of gas
Igangrene by the authors and other Rumanian scientists, done
since about 1961 at the
laboratory of Gangrene Research at the "Dr. I. Cantacuzino"

oedematiens,

!septicum, histolyticum, fallax, cochlearium, chauvoei,
bifermentans, sporocrenes,
iSordellii, gigas, and tertium) were studied. The antibiotics and
sulfa drugs used in
~testing were peniciUin, streptomycin, aureomycin, tetracycline,
erythromycin,
Ityrocidine, tyrothricin, bacitracin, nitrofuran, polyrnyxin B,

~penicillin does not affect the toxigenic capacity of the

!any other antibiotic also can be ineffective in vivo because
they cannot penetrate the

the great value of
lantibiotics as antimicrobial factors in gas gangrene treatment
was not denied, it was
iemphasized that such treatment must be complex, i. e.,
antitoxic, antimicrobial,
and surgical. Penicillin should be used clinically only in
association with other

ABSTRACT: Results of laboratory experiments on coking of heavy
fractions of oil shale tar with additions of NaOH, KOH,
CaO, N42CO-3 and L12CO are given. The raw material consis-
ted of a mixture of m9dium and heavy fractions (75f and 25%
respectively) of tars obtained from gas producers in the
KOkhtra-Yarve vorks?', The characteristic feature of the tar
was a high oxygen content - 6.'5%pof which 3r.3% was hydroxyl
oxygent the remainir4g 3".2% of oxygen - neutral of unkn
structure. Experimental results are given in tables 1-9
and figs',":L-2'. It waB established that on distillation up
to coke of higher fractions of oil shale tar in the presence
of alkali additionsp the decomposition of all compounds with
acid functibn takes place and the distillate produced Is
practically free from phenols'. This can be taken as an in-
direct confirmatiom that oxygelL eontaining compounds of the

the presence of alkali behave like phenolsq as the decompo-

carbinol compounds was not detected:. Alkali additions cause
a decrease of the temperature (in liquid) of the beginning
of distillation on cok"Ing by 80 - 100 C in comparison with
similar distillation without alkali additions The disti-

ABSTRACT: The workers of the plant "Krasnyy proletariy" (Red

19 Dec 1958, to produce 75 lathes above the plan, to fulfil
the plan early for supplying Soviet agriculture and China
with machine tools, to save 200 tons of metal and 800,000
man hours. The output per worker during the period January
to June was 115% of the plan. The quality of production is
to be increased, and the rejects reduced by 10%. The labor
used for producink the lathe 1K62 is to be decreased by 10
man hours.

The article describes the production lines and

(The Moscow

Yefremov), which received a positive ap-
praisal at the 21st
Congress of the CPSU (by F.R.
Kozlov, First Deputy Chairman
of the Council of Mini-
sters). Since 1956, the plant
produces the univer-
sal lathe "lK62", one of the best in
the world, and
uses the same production lines, on which the
parts
of this lathe are machined, for the parts of the
111K62B" (a new precision lathe). Other designs are
being
developed from the 111K6211, and the program-con-

the special and transfer machine tools in the plant's
lines exceed 31% of the overall equipment of the lines.
The continuous-milling method is in use (suggested
by Engineer V.A. Romanov) for some small parts, but
multi-spindle milling is employed (instead of the
former shaping) in the production of new machines.
An 11-spindle special finish-:-milling machine for ma-
chine tool frames is shown in Figure 2. In 1958 the
plant started the first in the USSR automatic machin-
ing line making 10 different types of spur gears; it

The high efficiency of the production line system of

ABSTRACT: The described.-contest started at the "Krasnyy
Proletariy" Plant, after an internal conference
on production quality in 1958. It was initiated by
F.V. Kalganov, chief foreman of a section with four
production lines machining machine tool frame parts
requiring class 1 and 2 accuracy. Technologist
A.S. Bugrov assisted Kalganov in the study of the
trouble sources which included faulty castings de-
livered by Moskovsk-iy zavod "Stankolit" (Moscow
Plant "Stankolit"), tool design, etc. Measures were
taken, some of which are specified~. setting cards were
provided for machines; sharpening the reamers down to

to eliminate too large bore diameters (caused by
wobbling of reamers and mandrels,, as well as inaccura-

machine parts was organized at the site; the technical.
inspection staffers helped in checking dimensions,. and
a set of slip gages was provided. Now, the reject can
be classified as caused by. the administration; the
shop; or by the shop section. Kalganov"'s section is
causing no rejects at all. 'Foreman Kalganov told of

TITLEt A Contribution to the Problem of Vertical Migration of
Clupea~HareAgus Membras L.
PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1959, Vol 128, tir 1, PP
179-182 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: In autumn 1956 complex investigations were started
Tfith regard
to environmental factors influencing the distribution of
clupea harengus membras L. in the Gulf of Finland, and special
attention was paid to the daily vertJc~3 mig%!ation, of this
fish.
The conventional theory extlaine this phenomenon as follows:
in search for food,. the fish follow the migrating plankton
organisms which are'their foodq and at 6sk they eat them in the
upper region of the water. A comparison of the3tythas of the
daily
food reception of the fish pad the distribution of their food
objects shows, howdverp' that the vertical migration does not
depend on the food factor. Clupea harengus pembras L. of the
Baltic Seav especially those of its northern part and its bayst
live under rough tam rature conditions. P. H. Brizinovas (Ref 1)
and L. N. Markova's rRef 2) investigations show that a water
temperature of about 10-120 at a depth of'Aot more than 15-20 m
Card 1A offers optimum conditions for the metabolism of the.fish.
A Contribution to the Problem of Vertical Migration of
SOV/20-128-1-48/58
Clupea.Harengus Membras L.
These data and the material collected by tl;e author
substantiate
the theory that the daily vertical migration is an adaptation
to thermal and trophical living conditions in the Gulf of
Finland. It would be more favorable for the fish to stay in the
upper and warmer region of the waterp since the rough
temperature conditions in the bottom region are not suited for
metabolism. The main fcod objects, however, remain in the oool
bottom region,, thus forcing the fish to receive nourishment
there.
Since food reception of clupea harengue membrae Lo is, an
active
process, it taken plaoe in daylight. Light in this case is a
stipulated signalt at dusk they swim into deeper re$dons for
the
r6oeption of footi. At dawn they migrata into warmer regions
where
digestion and metabolism are favored. There are 2 figures and
8 Soviet references.
