A, and B by means of serological tests, Including a complement fixation test, and by neutralization experiments on chick embryos. Rabbits, ferrets and mice immunized either with influenza virus- es or Haemophilus influenzae. or with both antigens. developed antibodies against the corresponding antigen. It was not possible to demonstrate a scrological rela- tionship between the influenza viruses and Haernophilus influenzae by ineans of cross serological reactions, satiating the serum containing antibodies to influenza viruses with Haemophilus influenzae. Rabbits proved unsuitable for experiments of this type. because of the presence of non-specific inhibitors and complement- fixing substances in reactions with influenza viruses and Haemophilus influenzae. I Firstly. the opcology of tick-borne encephalitis is discussed with respect to possi- ble reservoir-hosts among wild and domestic mammals, as well as migratory and sedentary birds and bats. In these animals generally latent infections occur, but when man enters into the natural cycle disease is observed. In the transmission from animal to animal and occasionally to man, ticks may play a role: the possi- bility of other ectoparasites is also suggested and should not be overiooked. but has as yet not been thoroughly investigated. In reviewing the epidemiology. a number of conflicting statements are made concerning the role of ticks (lxodes ricinus), not only in the transmission. but also as a reservoir of the virus. No such 'inconsistencies' are present with regard to the role of milk infecting human beings. Finally. the significance of active immunization with formalinized virus in the prevention of the disease. and the therapeutic application of hyperimmune horse serum are discussed. References 75. The virus is a ball of only 62-.110 milli- mikrons diameter, but of a very complicated chemical compo- sition. It appears in a cell by means of an enzyme, which helps its reproduction and subsequent separation from the cell. The virus enters the human body through the respira- tory organs and settles dawn on the surface of the laryngeal and bronchial passages. This process lasts about an hour., and then reproduction begins at an increasing speed. All the var4eties of viruses and theirintsraction are as yet little known. Abstract : Very condensed review of some basic problems related to the prevention of tick-borne encephalitis In men and animals: immunization by milk of vaccinated goats, cows and sheep; reducing normal spread of virus by vaccinating wild animals which are most frequent carriers. Bratislava, Violo i e Prac~e -45. &_ck_ _1 Vol 8, No 9, 1962; pp 38 Abstract [English summary modified]: Reports and discussion of data from the case histories of 27 hospitalized patients aged 6 to 63 with presumptive diagnosis of tick-borne encephalitis (14 in 1955, 8 in 56, 1 in 57, 4 in 58) in the Mate Moravce district. Spread through drinking goat milk (raw) was considered confirmed and in fact responsible for a family outbreak, although this mode of infection is thought to be less frequent than by tick-bite. All patients recovered. 1/1 00W.-P CZECHOSLOV,WIA ,B1.6UOUC,_D~, LIBIKOVA, H., ERXEK, E., GRESIKOVA, M., MACICKA, 0., VILCEK, J., MAYER, V. and REHACEK, J.; (Virologic Institute of CSAV, Bratislava.] "[Tick-Borne Encephalitis.
