ABSTRACT: Imperturbability is considered in relation. to two types
of single rotor
gyrocompass. The latter is aefined as imperturbable when the
direction -it indicates Is
a0armined totally by the velocity of the motion of Its base in the
terrestrial sphere, but is
independent of accelerations of such motion. The considered types
are a pendulum gyro-
compass (see Fig. I In.the Enclosure) ind a compass with a combined
fluid-torsional
method of suspension (see Fig. 2 in the Enclosure). Imperturbability
of the former re-
quires and Is satisfied by the observation of equality H=m/v In
conjuction with the condition
of perpendicularity of vectors H (angular momentum of gyrocompass
sensoir relative to its
mass center) and I (a vector describing the location of the mass
center relative to the point
of support). For the fluid-tlorsional suspension, Imperturbability
requires satisfactionI

into 3 groups:
(1) processes distinguished by sharp imeridional character,*

TEXT: Xaps of the mean monthly values of H-500 and H-500/1000 for
January and February from 1938 to 1959, constructed for the area
of the North Atlantic and Eurasia, were used to forecast the tem-
perature anomlay for -April and the natural synoptic season of
spring. Charts of the H-500/1000 differences from February to Ja-
nuary were constructed for 22 years. Four groups of the maps of
the
differences were exposed; these indicate the prevailing types of
synoptic processes and the sign of the air temperature anomaly

the USSR's European territory and Western Siberia during April

ces in the absolute H-500/1000 height values from February to

the beginning of March the general: character of the prevailing
synoptM processes and the average monthly ground-temperature. On
an average for 22 springs the qualitative coefficient of correla-

ABSTRACT: An investigation was performed in a wind tunnel (D
= 3m) on the
oscillatory characteristics of cylindrical bodies in a flow
of air
directed perpendicularly to the generatrix of the cylinder.
Tests
were made under various flow conditions corresponding to
impinging
airspeeds from 20 to 60 m/sec with the cylinder supported by
an
elastic mounting. The magnitude of the pressure on the
cylinder
was registered by means of low-inertia membrane-type

connected to static-pressure orifices, the velocity
pulsation in the

Oscillations of Cylindrical Bodies in an Air Flow
the oscillations of the cylinder occur at its natural frequency
(dependent on the
degree of elasticity of the mounting) in a plane perpendicular to
that of the imping-
ing air flow. This deduction is confirmed by previous observations
on the oscil-
lations of smokestacks conducted by the TsNIPS (Central Scientific
Research
Institute of Industrial Structures) and also coincides with the
deductions of S. P.
Strelkov (Zh. tekhn, fiz. , 1939, Vol 9, Nr 19) regarding the
self-excited oscil-
latory charac!-er of such a phenomenon. The authors note the
inconsistency of
the explanation of the origin of the oscillations of a cylinder in
an air flow by the
periodical detachment of Menard-KArmAn vortices. The case of wind
resonance
is examined, i. e. , when the frequency of the detachment of the
B6nard-K&rmAn
vortices coincides with the natural frequency of the oscillations
of the cylinder.
The paper presents oscillograms of the oscillations of a cylinder
at various air-
speeds, the magnitude of the drag of the cylinder in relation to
the R number, the
relationship between the amplitude of the oscillations of the
cylinder and the R
number, and oscillograms of the airspeed pulsations downstrea,-n
of the cylinder.
Strain-gage recordings, together with recordings of the detachment
of the vor-
tices with the cylinder in its extreme positions, are presented.
The frequency of
the vortex detachments coincides with the oscillatory frequency of
the cylinder.
On the basis of the values obtained, the relationship of the
normal-force

coefficient C. against the R number is given. The maximum C.
corresponds to
the wind-resonance condition and equals 0. 12. The results
obtained in the paper
may be used in the design of tower-type structures.

TITLE: Loss of aerodynamic damping in isolated structural
elements in the case of
angular oscillations
SOURCE: -AN SSSR. Izvestiya. Mekhanika zhidkosti i gaza, no. 5,
1966, 144-147
TOPIC TAGS: vibration damping, aerodynamic stability, wind,
angle of attack
ABSTRACT: The authors study the aerodynamic aspect of loss of
stability in engineer-
ing structures, i. e. the loss of aerodynamic damping in bodies
without any internal
shock absorption and with a single degree of freedom. Conditions
are studied under
which structural elements subjected to angular oscillations lose
their aerodynamic
damping. Damping coefficients are experimentally determined for
various wind direc-
tions. It is found that aerodynamic damping is lost in certain
region,5 of angles of
attack and an approximate method is proposed for calculating the
damping coefficients
for various wind directions. The theoretical and-experimental
data shove satisfactory
agreement. The maiciTnum loss of aerodynamic damping in an
angular struezural elem nt
takes place at adgles of attack from 60 to TOO and from -4o to
oO, i. e. at angles
where the derivative of a c' is negative and rather high in
absolute value. Orig. art.

ABSTRACT: The machining of a certain tractor part (Figure 1)
requires
2 operations on 2 different machines: the cutting of a
threaded opening on a turret lathe and the drilling a center
hole on a vertical drilling machine. By a simple device
shown in figure 2, the 2 operations can be combined in one
process. The centering drill is attached by a bracket to the
turret lathe. There are 2 figures.

ABSTRACT: A study is made of the living conditions on fishing ships
as well as
the measures to be taken for decreasing roll and vibration on these
ships. The
need of equipping the floating base ships with heavy-duty
distillation facilities and
the ships, operating in tropic waters, with air conditioning
systems is pointed out.
