ABSTRACT: A device for the automatic maintenance of operating instruments mounted on
a vehicle at a constant height above the ground independent of vehicle load is de-
scribed. The distinguishing feature of the device is that the operating instruments
are suspended from cables or chains leading from guide pulleys mounted on the suspend-
ed parts of the vehicle and attached to one arm of a tvo-armed lever vhich is attached
like a pendulum to the sprung parts of the vehicle and is supported by the second arm
of the unsprung ps*..t of the vehicle.

ABSTRACT: The authors consider the stability of indivIdual elements in a man-machine
AygkaLunder the effect of random control signals. The extreme variability in the dyn~gc-
parameters of the human operator in each specific case makes It necessary to use statistical
characteristics to account for the degree of nonlinear Information conversion by the operator.
A generalized statistical characteristic is given which reflects the structural properties of in-
put and outputerrors made by the operator. The degree of nonlinear information conversions made
by a hurnan operator is experimentally evaluated by studying the effect of nonstationary input action
on the output errors of the operator. The operator was required to follow a target moving In conform.
ity with a nonstationary random function with various parameters. Specimens of the programmed
motion of the target are given together with the results of human traclong. The efficiency of the oper

tor was evaluated by the output error defined as the root-mean-square deviation of the pointer
used to follow the target from the mathematioal expectation. A hypothetical model Is proposed
for the human tracking system based on two control circuits: external-exteroceptive and Inter-
.nal -proprIoceiptive. The characteristic feahtres of this human cybernetic model are discussed
and the correlation fazictions for error components calculated on the basis of this model are
compared";&h experimental data. The results Indicate that a buman operator should be used

ABSTRAM A report on this paper was given at the All-Union Conference
on "Ways of Synthesis of Initial Products for the Production of
High Polymers" which took place in Yaroslavl' from September 29
to October 21 1956. Among the polymer synthetics, gaining more
and more importance, the acryl derivatives are outstanding be-
cause of their many valuable properties. On the other hand, poly-
Meru obtained from the derivatives of acrylic and methacrylic
acid esters show considerable shortcomings such as little resi-
stivity to heat,wear, and crack formation. One of the ways of
eliminating these shortcomings is polymer production on the basis
of the esters mentioned in the title. Only a-substituted esters
can '3e used (Refs 1,2). After giving a survey of publications
(Refs 3-9), the authors state that the synthesis of the esters

alcohol is of high practical interest (because the initial sub-
stgnees triethylene chloride and formaldehyde are easy to obtain)
(Refs 11,12). In the paper under review, publication data on
the synthesis of methyl esters were taken into consideration, and
the way of synthesis of other esters (ethyl, n.propyl-, iso-
propyl-, n.butyl-, isobutyl-, isoamyl-, and cyclohexyl-ester)
were investigated. The synthesis of the acid mentioned in the
title withan extended carbon chain has been little described in
publications (Ref 4). Acrylic acid ester, acrylonitrile, and
triethylene chloride were used as raw materials. Starting from
the former, any esters can be synthesized in two stages: a)
synthesis of the ester of a, P- dichloropropionic acid, b) dehydro-
chlorination of dichloro derivatives obtained from propionic
acid by means of various separating agents. C o n c 1 u s i o n s;
1) In the chlorination of acrylic acid esters by means of gaseous
chlorine in the presence of dimethyl formamide, corresponding
esters of a,/,'~-dichloropropionic acid are formed with a yield
of more than 9o% (of the theoretical yield). 2) a,~ -dichloro-
propionitrile was formed by direct chlorination of acrylonitrile
under the same conditions. This method of chlorination is new.

3)Preparation of esters of the acid mentioned under 1) from the
substance mentioned under 2) gives a yield of up to 75ti, it
is convenient, and interesting with regard to waste utilization
of acrylonitrile production. 4) By means of chlorination, sapo-
nification, and esterification of acrylonitrile, various esters
of dichloropropionic acid can be obtained in one process (yield
up to 80%)- 5) Sodium acetate proved to be the best separating
agent in dehydrochlorination of the ester of a I/1-dichloro-
propionic acid (yield of eo%). 6) Various esters can be obtained
in the preparation of the esters of a-chloroacrylic acid from
triethylene chloride and formaldehyde in the presence of the
respective alcohol and H 2so 4' The ester yield decreases with in-
creasing chain length of the alcohol radical. No esters are
formed if isoamyl- and cyclohexyl alcohol are used. There are
2 figures, 1 table, and 12 references, I of which is Soviet.

ABSTPACT: The author begins his article with a historical re-
view of the situation of the chemical industry in Ru-
mania, That situation is described as unfavorable du-
ring the capitalistic period. After nationaliZation
of the industrial, mininG, transportation and banking
companies, the socialist sector of the chemical indus-
try was established. In July 1948, research institutes
and semi-industrial production plants were created to
meet increasing requirements. One of those organiza-

lowing workshops: sulfuric acid and inorganic chemis-
try, non-ferrous metallurgy, petrochemistry and syn-
thetic rubber, chemical processing of natural gas,
organic synthesis, drugs and mining. Detailed data
are. giver, on the activities of the personnel, the
number of working hours, average salariesp distribu-
tion of the planning, cooperation with foreign, es-
pecially Soviet institutions such as Giprokhim Moscow,

Abstract: (Author's Huncarian summary) The author presents a case of
ammonium chloride poisoning. The resultant severe hypokalemia was accompanied
by respiratory paralysis and transient kidney Insufficiency. The recovery
of the patient is attributed to the electrolytedetermination which is carried
out routinely in severe cases. The author discusses the mechanism of the de-
velopment of hypokalemia. The possibility is jeesented that, in addition to
the known changes occurring in severe hypokalemia, a liver function dis-

Abstract: (Authors' Hungarian summary) On 4 patients, a total of 3 thoracic
sympathectomy (Smithwick-Telford) operations were perfomed. Three of the
patients underwent surgery because of occlusion of a main vessel; one had
Buerger's disease. By means of the original technique of thoracic sympatheo-
towj as recommended by Smithwick, excellent results were achieved in every
case. The uniformly good result is considered to be a condition which must
definitely be taken into consideration when the indications for an eventual
reconstructive operation are set up. All 11 references are Western,

TEOXT: Earlier studies (P. A. Vlasyuj'c, Rost rasteniy (The Growth
of~Plants), Izv. Llvovskogo un-ta, 1959, 36*3-370) had shown that
treatment of sugar beets with radioactive isotopes stimulates

-the grow'th of the crop. The authors decided to study the effect of
x rays. It was assumed that the expected influence would be-more
marked if sprouting seedlings were exposed rather than the inactive
dry seeds. The 3eed's were moiutened and when they had'begun to
sprout they were exposed t.o x rays from-a distance of 2 m at a
rate of 1000 r/min. The mature roots were,weighed and compared with
the weight of nonirradiated roots which'served as the control.

Exposure Of Sj)rQLIIing seedlings to doses between 500 and 1000 r
was fo'und to lead to a significant increase in the yield of sugar
beets, carrots and marrows. Irradiation of dry seeds, conversely,,
decreased the yield and the average weight of the roots. After-ex-
posure to radiation, the roots had a somewhat higher proportion
of parenchymatous tissue which led to a slight decrease in the
sugar content. There are 6 tables.
