ABSTRACT: Authors examined the effect of swaging upon the
stability of cutting tools.made out of R18 steel. The tools
were swaged in a stamp with a conical die. After swaging,
they were face-ground to a depth of 1-2 mm in order to removed
the surface crust. Temperature and heating time varied.
The effect of austenite grain growth and carbide eutectic
upon the stability of the swaged cutting tools wer... examined.

Authors, found that swaging at a pressure of about 7000
i.kg/cmo increases the stability of cuttingtools made out of
R18 steel by 40-50%. Grain growth does not reduce the
observed effect. Combininf of the stamping and heat.
treatment operations great simplifies the technology of
cutting tool production. TKis has a great practical signi-
ficance in the mass production of cutting tools with complex
shapes (milling cutters, drills, cutting tools, etc). The
-wear resistance during swaging is augmented on account of an
increase in the dispersion of the submicrostructure. In
contrast to austenitization swaging brings about a
volumetric change of the RlA steel's properties. Orig. art.

ABSTRACT.- The described fission chambers were used to measure the distributions 9f
neutrons in the active zone of the reactor of the Beloyarak Nuclear Power Stationr/im.,
1. V. Kurchatov ditring the physical starting. Two iWo-~i-e! were constructed. One-cou14
be 'used without a,1gdmium screen in the fuel clejaent tubes and with a cadmium screen
in the central tube of the working channel of the reactor, This chamber was built in
a stainless steel housing 5.5 rnm diameter (0.25 mm thick) and ha, a cathode of aluai-
numIand a layer of fissioning material (0.5 Mg/CM-" Of U235 (90% enriched)) Fu239j and
Th232). The second variant, unlike the first, could be used to make measurements witb
cadmivm screen in the fuel elements of the working channels of the reactor. This
chamber had a atainless steel housing of 2 mm diameter and an anodo in the form of
a tungsten wire coated with U235 (90%) of thickness 2 mg/cm2. The chambers were
filled with c ercial argon to 4 atm pressure for the first type and 10 atm for the
second. These pressures resulted in maximum pulse amplitude at the chamber output.

The first type of chamber had a sensitivity (when uraniu4 was used) of approximattely

LE: Using the boron filter method for measuring the spectrum of neutrone in a col-

ABSTRACT: Filters of various thickness are placed in the path of a collimated beam of
neutrons and the particles passing through these filter- are recorded to give a system
of equations for determining integral neutron fluxes:

to Ej+,&Ej; Pjis the count of the neutron detector at the position of a filter with
thickness xj; Zj is the average macroscopic cross section of deviation from the beam
for neutrons with energies in the interval AEj; nj is the average sensitivity of the
detector in the energy range AV J, This method is used for determining the spectrum
of neutrons in a collimated beam from the core surface in a water-water reactor type
IRT-1000. The detector was an "all-wave" neutron counter with a sensitivity which is
practically constant over a wide energy range. Th~ filters were amorphous boron.
Since the deviation cross section for boron shows resonance at high energies, the con-
tinuous spectrum for neutrons may be obtained only at energies below 0.4 Mev corre-
sponding to the first resonance level. The filters were placed at the beam exit and
the counter was located 4 m from this exit. A 1 mm sheet of cadmium was placed in
front of the filters to eliminate thermal neutrons. The transmission curve is used to
determine the integral neutron fluxes on the basis of the given equation in energy
ranges of 0.4-200 ev, 200-105 ev, 0.1-2 Mev and 2-10 Mev. The resultant spectrum is
compared with those obtained by the Laplace transform method and by 18-group calcula-
tion of'the neutron spectrum at the core boundary. Orig. art. has; 2 figures, 4 formu-

ABSTRACT: For a period of 7 days, four specially chosen healthy subjects
2i-~29 years old lay flat in bed under conditions of limited isolation.
Two of the subjects received a special ration of homogenized foods, while
the other two received a ration identical in calorie content (2200 kcal)
and chemical composition, but prepared by ordinary cookir. g methods.
Water consumption was unlimited.
