ABSTRACT: With mineral fertilizers becoming increasingly available in the Buryat
ASSR. the author reports on the use of suporphosphate in the southern steppe zone from
1963 to 1965o In this area the winters are long and cold with little anow, spring is
characterized by strong winds causing dust storms, and the summers are short and hot.
Average precipitation ranges from 215 to 300 mm, with 60% of the precipitation falling
during July and August. The soils are mostly chestnut medium loamy with a
cultivatable layer of 13 to 40 cm. Under these poor conditions the only technique for
increasing crop yields prior to the use of fertilizers was to have the fields remain'
completely fallow. Starting in 1963 the increased availability of fertilizers made it
possible to fertilize grain cultures in addition to the-food and vegetable cultures.
ISuporphosphate (10 kgAectare) was introduced during sowing of grain with the use of

Title The Importance of Record-Setting Cows in
Pedigreed Herds
Orig Pub Zhivotnovodstvo, 1958,kNo 1, 54-6o
Abstract By analyzing the work of pedigreed breeding
in order to create herds with a high milk fat
content, the author came to the conclusion
that the only sure method to create such herds
is the utilization of Inbred sires which have
descended from ancestors with abundant and fat
milk or of crossings in which various breeds
are employed.

ABSTRACT: Efficiency of direct current transmitters can be con-
siderably increased if each transformer arm is provided
instead of a single valve with a group of valves connec-
ted in series. L.R. Neyman, Corre8pondent-Member of the
AS USSR, has proposed usingp beside connection in seri-
also connection of valves in parallel. Reference

in parallelo special induction dividers of current are
to be used; they may be made in the form of reactors
with or without steel cores. This article analyzes the
use of reactors without the steel cores (anode reactors).
In Fig 1, a layout illustrating a three-phase double-
bridge transformer, which served for research is given.
Fig 2 shows two possible group connections of valves.
For further calculations, it is assumed that: Generator
electromotive forces are sinusoidal and form a symmetri-
cal system; rectified current (Id) has no pulsation;
transformer magnetizing currents and the active resis-
tance of leads and windings are equal to zero; coeffi-

of equations expressing electromagnetic processes pass-
ing in the above transformerl and proceeds by analyz-
ing the condition when 4, 5 and 6 equivalent valves
are in simultaneous operation. Fig 3 illustrates two
valves connected in parallel. The main claims of anode
reactors are: 1) They must create a drop in tension
sufficient to ensure ignition of valves connected in
parallel; 2) they must limit the difference in currents
and ensure a sufficiently uniform distribution of curr-
ent between the valves connected in parallel; 3) they
should not appreciably increase the duration of commu-
tation. Further, the author determines the threshold
value of anode reactors inductivity and gives, in Fig
4, a graph showing dependence of this value on.the load
of the inverter. Inductivity of anode reactors needed
for safe ignition of valves connected in parallel, in
case their cathodes are linked, is expressed by the

cient of reserve; W tj + c( - optimum value which amounts
for reversibletransformers to 5-9 electric degrees. In
conclusion, the author analyzes the question of determi-
ning the inductivity of anode reactors which is needed
for limiting the differences in currents when valves
are connected in parallel. Experimental research of high-
voltage valves connected in groups for transmitting di-
rect current on the line Kashira-Moscow has proved that
anode reactors ensure an adequate performance of valves
and a proper distribution of current among them. There
are 3 graphs, 3 figures and 3 Soviet references.

TIMT: 'The following assumptions have been made in designing a
voltage doubler: The rectifier characteristic is determined by two
straight liue8; the rectifier is connected to an infinite power
sine-wave source; the load is purely resistive. The analysis of
processes in the circuit results in a differential equation of the
second order. The equations obtained for currents and voltages in
the rectifier permit determination of their values as functions of
time. The analytical expressions for the average voltages and cur-

several graphical representations of interim values are given which
enter into the voltage and current expressions. Using the given
graphs it is possible to construct the load characteristic of a
given rectifier. The experimental checks of the results have sho-'AI
good agreement between the theoretical and experimental data. 6

ABSTRACT: At the be*ginningt the transition RaC -a- RaClp and further
the transition RaC" ---w RaD9 are indicated as the fundamental
cause of the hard 7-radiationg and figure I shows a branching
of the radioactive series of the radium family. The energy
levels of these transitions are investigatedlanda number of
previous papers is indicated. In the present paper, a
y-hodoscope of the NIFI LGU was used for investigating the
hard y-rays. Two series of measurements were carried out. In
the first series# the range of from 3,070 kev to 5,600 kev
was investigated. The results of these measurements are shown

was practically not measured in the first series, and was
absolutely not measured in the second aeries. The diagrams
show the existence of y-lineo with the energy of .
3000-3,200 kev. The second diagram also shows an increase
in the electron output in the range of 3,500-3,800 kev, and
this is attributed to the transition RaC" --P-RaD according
to figure 1. The transitions RaC ---%-RaC' and RaC* --w-RaD
are indicated forthe y-lines with the energy of about
3,200 kev, and finally it is ascertained that lines with an
energy of more than 3,900 key could not '.,a detected. The

TEXT: The article under review was read at the Tenth All-Union Confer-
ence on Nuclear Spectroscopy (Moscow, January 19 - 27, 1960~. The data
available on La140 decay do not permit a definite determination of the
ground-otate spin of this isotope. Therefore, the authors of this
article studied the P-transition from the ground state of La140 to the
ground state of COO. Measurements were carried out in the range 1,800
49000 kev by means of a now p-espeotrometer (a 0--hodosoope) by NIFI LGU.
This instrument differs from the P-hodoscope described in Ref. I only in
that it uses a p-active preparation as electron source, instead of a
y-irradiated target. Altogether, seven series of measurements were made

with different magnetic field strengths and different sources. Each
series covered an energy range of AE::,-19000 key. The results obtained
were composed in such a manner that the range 1P8OO - 4,000 kev was
continuously covered (Fig. 1). The left-hand diagram of Fig. I il-
lustrates the P.-spectrum of Ls,140 with the energy limit Elim"2200 key.
The electron distribution found between 29200 and 3P850 key was
identified as a continuous spectrum of the P-transition between the
ground states of L9.140 and Ce140 and as conversion lines of the
I-transitions of COO. Fig. 2 shows the determination of energy limits
by means of Curie curves. The authors found that the most probable spin
value of the La140 ground state is 3- Further, they detected conversion
lines having electron energies of (2,490M) and (29880t30) key. These
lines had been detected already earlier. A line of (39100150) key was
found for the first time. The energies of the corresponding y-transitiong
and the intensities of the conversion lines are listed in a table. The
conversion coefficients of the transitions were ax-2P530 a 3*4*lo-4 and
a1(-2,920 - 3,1*lo-4. A comparison with theoretical results indicated VK
