PURPOSE: This booklet is intended for radio amateurs who have some
. knowledge in the radio field.
COVERAGE: Principles of operation and calculation of the parameters
of some trigger devices are covered in the booklet. The two
conditions of stable balance are discussed. Practical diagrams
of trigger devices are also given. These devices are widely used in
pulse counters and computerii. Particular attention is given to
devices with cold cathode gas tubes, electron tubes and semi-
conductor triodes. There are no references and no personalities
are mentioned.

TEXT: The instrument is based on the television receiver,
type "316.PaH " ("EKRANII). The block diagram of the device
is shown in Fig. 1. This C012SiStS of a DC amplifier, a
cathode-ray tube with a mask, a photoelectric multiplier, a
horizontal time-base generator, a multivibkator, an amplifier-
limiter, a sawtooth voltage generator, 2 low-frequency filters
and an amplitude or level analyser. The operation of the
system is as follows. The boam of the cathode-ray tube can
move horizontally when driven by a horizontal time base, and
vertically when it is deflactod by the input signal, which can
be either periodic or random,. The frequency of the horizontal
time base is much higher than the upper frequency of the input
signal spectrum. Consequently, the beam moves almost hortz-
ontally across the screen. The vertical position of the beam

is linearly dependent on the Instantaneous value of the input
signal. An opaque mask with tw6 slots is attached to the
front of the screen. The distance between the slots obeys
the law e = fi(h) , where h is the distance measured from
the line of the time base corresponding to the zero input
signal, while e is the horizontal distance between these
slots. A photoelectric multi.plier Is situated in front of the
mask. When the beam moves hoximontally, a pair or short
pulses is obtained at the out~put of thaphotomultiplier. The
interval between those pulses is equal to 1% = f i(h)vl where
v is the velocity of the beam on the screen. Consequently,

conversion facilities offered by the device. The input
Aignals applied to the converter can be either periodic
orrandom and their spectrum should be contained between
0 and 1 kc/s. A detailed circuit diagram of the device is
shown in Fig. 2. The vertical displacement of the beam on
the screen of the tube is obtained by applying the input
signal to a DC amplifier consisting of 3 tubes. The horiz--,
ontal time base is provided by a blocking oscillator. The
anode of the cathode-ray tube is supplied from a rectifier
circuit based on two tubes. The pair of pulses generated
by the photomultiplier are amplified and limited by the
amplifier-limiter circuit CDnsisting of 2 tubes. The first
pulse of the pair triggers a multivibrator, while the second
pulse returns it to its original state. The multivibrator
.s synchronised by the pulses from th-e horizontal time base.
The pulses from the second anode of the multivibrator have
a duration "r, and this corresponds to the time taken by
the ray to travel from one slot on the mask to the other.

The pulses are then applied to a low-frequency filter where
their DC component is separated. The pulses are also used
to trigger a sawtooth waveform generator. The amplitude of
the sawtooth waveform, is proportional to the duration of the
multivibrator pulses. The :shape of a mask used for converting
the normal distribution law into a Rayleigh distribution is
illustrated in Fig. 3. The mask shown in Fig. 4 is used for
converting the normal law into a uniform probability distrl-
bution function. There are 4 figures and 3 references;

ABSTRACT: The experimental apparatus consisted of a one-stage turbineo hooked up with
a direct current electric motor. The air was supplied by a compressor. The article
gives a detailed diagram of the experimental apparatus. For experimental determination
of the logarithmic decrement from the oscillograms of the damped vibrations the
following relationship was used:
