TITLE: Some data on the influence of temperature on the strength and pla:,ticity of refractory compounds PERIODICAL: Poroshkovaya metallurgiya, no. 2, 1962, 87-91 TEXT: The investigation of physicochemical properties of refractory compound-base alloys in a wide temperature range is neu*sitated by their increasing use as constructional matcrials as elcvatcd tempcraturcs. This work investigates the regularity of variation of strength of titanium carbide, molybdenum carbide and zirconium boride under short-time static loads at temperatures from 20'C to 2500'C. Titanium and molyb- denum carbides were found to have a maximum bending strength at 0.6 of their melting points. The plasticity of titanium carbide was found to increase with temperature and to reach considerable values at 2200-2400'c, while molybdenum carbide and zircomium boride showed no such effect. Generali-zed experimental data have permitted the determination of optimal conditions in the operation of a separation: column. The present article uses this method to evaluate the loss of kinetic ener'! gy of a inoving gas in a tube with injection of a homogeneous gas. The mathema- fical treatment of the problem is carried through'in cylindrical coordinates. This subject is reviewed In the present survey article which covers a total of 86 studies in,.:Iuding 35 Soviet works. Cases with chemical reaction in the boundary-layer are not considered. Among the Soviet studies reviewed, the following articles deserve mentioning: Three theoretical studies by ILotulevJifeli" in which transpiration cooling Aq apalyzeil and the integration of the boundary layer equations is attempted. Kutatei'ald'Z6, presented analyses, made with the assumption that the sublayer is dii tr-oye-d-,~Iad that boundary layer conditions are similar to those at an infinite 11eynolds nuzker. These studies yielded relationships for the friction and heat transfer coefficients as a function of the intensity of the coolant injection. The experiments were performed on single crystal films with a specific resistance of the order of 90 ohm. am grown at 1200C on silicon base layers. The results show that the phosphorus diffusion coefficient in epitaidal film at 1000C is 3. 10-12 cm2/sec, and differs considerably from the phosphorus diffusion coefficient at the same temperature in single crystals of silicon (3- 10-14 cm%cc). Mashinostroyeniye, no. 4, 1966, 59-63 TOPIC TAGS: engine piston, engine cylinder, carburization, chromium plating ~A'IZTIUCT: Methods are proposed for increasing the wear resistance of the upper piston! jrinj3s in tractor engines by carburizing the chrome-plated surface. The surfaces ol, the ;rings and cylinder were knurled before chrome plating. The ?riijrl depressions were - I i ~totrahedral pyr,,mids with a base of 0.5x0.5 mm located 2 =, apart with a depth of 0.18-; ! i 1-0.25 mm. After chrome plating, the rings were chemically heat treated -'in a solid car- I !burizer of the following composition: carbon--505", Na2CO3-20', Fe (filings)-30/2': :The heat treatment was continued for 5 hours at 9500C. X-ray structural analysis I I ishowed a gray layer of chromium carbide on the metal surface. This layer was 60-80 P !'thick and was not etched by a 3-4% solution of HN03 or a 15-20% solution of HC1. The carbide layer is heat- and acid-resistant with a hardness of 1400-1600 kg/cmz. It was ifound that carburization increases the service life of chrome-plated piston rings by a~- ,~factor of 1.3-2.2. The article was presented for publication by A. 1. Thus, the amount, lof ozone in the atmosphere was found to vary with the passage of a I-Cord- ------ L 018G8-66 ACCESSION NRt ATS021765 cold, warm, or occluded front in various positions relaCive to a given station. The author proposes that variations in the amount of ozone in the atmosphere may he used as a criterion in forecasting fronts and in determining frontal circulation more accurately. Data obtained in July-September 1963 at Abastumani on the correlation between variations in the amount of ozone and the temperature in the troposphere and lower stratosphere are cited to corroborate the author's contention that a drop in temperature in tFe troposphere is accompanied 'y an increase in the J S P 17~' as r __3_f igures-and SOCIATION: Zakavkazskiy nauchno-iseledovatel'okly g1drometeoro- AS gicheskiyAnstitut (Transcaucasus Scienti.f_jC__&C_"arrh I ydra- 110 teoroloeical Institute~ !SUBHITTEDt 00 ENCLe 00 SUB GODEi ES INO REP SOVI 004 OTHER: 001 ATD PRESS! card _212- 'fie MaXiMal deviation in P -Tees wa3 at IdLitudes 40-50" N and the minimal at 30-40" N. For anti- cyclones the deviation is less in Asia than in Europe. The author considers verti- cal air motions to be the principal cause of the deviation: the total content of ozone increases in an upper-level cyclone as a consequence of descending air curren and it decreases In an upper-level anticyclone as a consequence of ascending air currents. Statistical data showed that in most cases, the total content of the atmospheric ozone increases in high cyclones and decreases in high anticyclones. The latitudinal and seasonal course of the deviation of total content of the ozone was obtained, as well as con- tinental variations in the deviation of total content of ozone in high cyclones and Card I / 2 ACC NR, AT7004235 anticyclones. The qualitative characteristics of vertical air velocity in high cyclones and anticyclones to discussed. Orig. art. has: 7 figures and 5 tables.
