The processes of gametogenesis are well protected within the organism against direct environmental ef- fects. The variety of gametes is suf- ficient to explain the phenomenon of va- riation. The author thinks that it is possible to explain evolution, at least in some systematic groups, without admitting adequate modifications and the hereditary transmission of acquired characteristics. Biochemical changes during environmental vicissitudes offer ample material for selection; among the changes which have arisen, some may accidentally happen which prove to be adequate. TEXT, Tl-e paper describes the development of a methc,:! for the vacuum refin- ing Q~ with the use of a flux, and the construction and development of a vacuum equipment for the refining of Al alloys capable of refining a melt of up to 300 kg. The refining method developed was intended to remove the various gaseous fir',and solid nonmetallic* impurities which enter Into an At alloy in the coursa of its, smelting and to avoid, also, the difficulties encountered with method used harcto.-ore, which consisted In the to3deity of the Cl and the chlorous and fluorous malts used to eaze~ The basic concepts of the now method are the following: The impurities en- countered 'An Al melts consist of H and oxides, primarily Al.oxides. The F carries a positive charge (HI* ~;heraaz the Al oxides are charged negatively (0?-). Card 1/2 Vacuum refining of Aluminum alloys. S/7Z4,1f6l/0G0/000/0l8/OZO Hence, the H is readily adsorbed Of -cad on the particles Al oxide. If the H can be indt_ by' the application of& vacuum to migrate to the surfale of the malt, it is pos,.Jated that the solid nonmetallic impurities should be cntrai~ed thereby and become sus- j ceptible to capture by adsorption by a suitable flux placed on the surface of the melt. The rate of progress of such a process should be controllable simply by altering the power applied to the vacuum pump. The investigation, was made on AM (AL4) and i AA9 (AL9) Al alloys. The relationship between the wbight of a melt and the vacuum- ing time was explored experimentally. While the test'remults Indicated that the Mg content remained constant regardless of the vacuuming time, the porosity of the alloy was appreciably reduced in vacuuming tests lasting from Z to 6 minutes. The addition of a suitable flux, as defined above, improved the degassing, with a subsequent further! reduction in porosity and improvement in the mechanical pronerties of the alloy by 10-157*,' this improvement eliminz.:es the need for crystallization of cast parts: in an autoclave in many instances. Typical vacuum- refinirlg times at 780-7900C, in the presence of O.Z614 of a suitable flux, are-. For a metal!weight of 50-100 kS, 3 min: 100-150 kg. 5 min. 150-250 kg, 7-9 min. This conference dealt with problems of a rejular distribution of coal in the earth's crust as a basis of forecasts on the territory of the USSR. To work out a theory for the use of geologists with scientifically founded methods of prognosis is considered to be one of the important tasks in dealing with this problem and thus is further discussed in detail. The research work concerning the history of coal accumulation on the territory of the USSR is considered to be Card 1/3 the most important part of this problem. Since 1956 this work .1 Investigations of Problems of Carbon Geolocy. ~:Ov/'3o-56-7-37/49 Tranadctione of the Conference in Moscow has been carried out in the Laboratory of Carbon Geology (as leading institute) as well as by a series of other institutions of the AS USSR, its branch institutes, the AS of the Union's republics, the Ministry of Geology and Protection of Mineral Resources of.the USSR (Ministerstvo geologii i okhrany nedr SSSR) and other authorities. Members of the permanent committee of coordination of work concerning this problem are: leading scientists in the field of carbon geology as well as represent- atives of various authorities and institutions. This permanent committee was founded as an adjunct to the Department of Geolo- gical and Geographical Sciences of the AS USSR (head: the Corresponding Member,AS USSR, I.I.Gorskiy). Regional committees were founded in order to assist them. Every year the permanent cow.ittee of coordination of work held conferences dealing with this problem. The now mentioned conference was attended apart from the members of the committee by representatives of a number of geological and academic institutions and of authorities as well as a representative from Czechoslovakia (Chekhoolovakiya); altogether 6o persons. It was found that the same work is planned Card 2/3 by some organisations at the same time in the same field. This Investigations of Problems of Carbon Geology. 30-58-7-37/49 Transactions of the Conference in Moscow requires a better coordination between the institutions concerned. In the years 1956 - 1958 drafts were made of various charts of the coal holding areas. At the same time various disadvantages were shown since some decisions of the previous committee had not been carried out. The conference showed possi- bilities for further iMDrovement of research work. Card 3/3 PAFMHCHIIIA, Ye.A#-, SH"UDO, I.I.; SEMIKOV. A.A. Vses. n.i. in-ta zh.d. transp", no. 214, 1961, 137-147 TEXT: Results are reported on comparative investigations of a piston-rod three-chamber stuffing box with six rings (design of the TsNII MPS type, initially mounted by the Lugansk plant on free piston gas engines) and on a five-chamber stuffing box with five rings. The second design has certain advantages as compared with the first type at statically steady inlet and outlet pressures. The authors suggest to use stuffing boxes with a single ring in the sealing chamber. Study of the behavior of such seals requires further "dynamicc" tests on a special unit mounted in the buffer cavity of a full scale free piston gas engine. There are 6 figures and 9 references. The calculation of the forma- tion enthalpy presupposes that all solutions synthesized from these four reactions contain the same products~This was checked by determining the optical density of the solutions. The re- sults of this investigation indicated a uniform final product of all four reactions. The course of calculating the formation enthalpy of MoCl is given. Table 3 contains the values of formation enthalpy of the individual compounds under investi-- gation. The following values hold for MoCl 5' MoOCI 4 and MoO 2Cl2 -126-56, -153-48 and -173,08 kcal/moles. Further, the authors determined the reaction enthalpy of Mocl 51; MOOCI4and McO2 Ci 29 with solutions containing 0.02 n KMnO 4 and 2 n H 2 so4. The cal- oulatiod was made at 250. Seriya fiziki i khimii, 1959, Nr 2, Pp 72-77 (USSR) ABSTRACT: In this paper, which represents part of the dissertation by B. N. Sharupin, a checking of the value of the formation enthalpy of the molybdenum tetrachloride was-carried out. In a previous paper(Ref 4), the dissociation enthalpy of the Mocl5 had been computed by.use of tensimetrical data from the reaction: [Nocl 51 + 12.2 kcal - 09001 41 + 1/2 C12 (1). The formation enthalpy AR of the MoCl 5 was assumed with -90.8kcal/iol According to references 5,1,2 'The value obtained for AH of the MoCl 4agreed with-the corresponding values of the men- Card 1/4 tioned papers. The investigations-were carried out at 250C. To investigate a possible disproportionation of MoCl 4 in the presence of trivalent iron in MoCl 3 and MoCl 5% and a fur- ther oxidation of the ion Mo3+ to U05+, the optic density of the solution obtained in the calorimeter was determined (Fig 1). This showed that in this solution only the pentavalent molybdenion was present. (For the synthesis of Mon 51 see ref- erence 4.) The synthesis of MoCl 4 was carried out on the plant Card 2/4 represented in figure 2. The beat conditions for the synthesis 507/54-59-2-10/'24 On the Investigation of Molybdenum Halides. Synthesis and Determination of Formation Enthalpy of Molybdenum Tetrachloridi proceeding according to the reaction: Mo+0 2+2CC14-MoCl 4 +2COC12 are: temperature of furnace 300 0, temperature of the saturator 250, and velocity of nitrogen 5-6 1/hour- 5-6 g MoCl 4 were ob- tained in this way in 8 hours. The determination of the enthalpy is described in the papers (Refs 6,12). The values of the reaction enthalpies of MoCl and MoCl with the mentioned 1 4 5 solution are compiled in tables 1,2. The computation of the formation.enthalpy of MoCl 4 Was carried out on the basis of the following reactions: MoCl 5+H 20(0.5% FeCl 31 2% HCl)-MoOC13 +2HCI; Mocl +FeC1 +H O.MoOCj +HCI+FeCl.. The formation enthalpy of the 4 3 2 3 components of this re8c tion-is indicated in table 3, taken from -the,papers (Refs 6,12,2). the formation enthalpy for MoCl was 4 determined at -(1143) kcal/mol. This value coincides with the value obtained in the paper (Ref 6) from tensimetric data for the dissociation reaction of MoCl and its formation enthalpy. Seriya fiziki i khimii, 1960, No. 2, pp. 112-120 113 TEXT: The present article comprises part of the material used in the 13 dissertation of B. 1. Sharupin. It was found that in the oxydation of molybdenum di- and trioxide in oxygen a mixture of molybdenum trioxide and molybdea- dioxide is obtained. Table 1 gives the results obtained by analysis of the molybdenum- and chlorine content in MoCl and MoCl 3 21 which are ooidpared with the data calculated according to theory. The calorimeter used for the determination of combustion enthalpy was calibrated with metallic magnesium, which was obtained in spectroscopically pure state from the Vsesoy-uznyy alyuminiyevo-magniyevyy institut (All-Union A-luminum-Magnesium Institute). The results of calibration are given in Card 1/2 The Investigation of the Halides of Molybdenum. S/054/60/000/02/14/021 IV. The Determination of the Formation Enthalpy B022/hOO7 of Molybdenum Di- and Triohloride Table 2. Also the effect produced by various quantities of chlorine in the cylinder during combustion are investigated (Table 3). The enthalpy in the combustion of MoCl and M0012 in oxygen at a pressure of 40 atmospheres and at 250C was determined. The combustion products were determined by dissolution in CU in which M003 is not soluble and the oxyohlorides are easily soluble. Thl results are given in Table 4. The total quantity of molybdenum and chlorine in the combustion products, as well as the quantity of Mo03 was titrimetrically determined, and herefrom the percentual molybdenum- and chlorine content in oxychloride was calculated. The results are given in Tables 5 and 6. The thermograms of the preparations investigated (Fig.)p the combustion-enthalpy of MoC13 (Table 7) and MOC12 (Table 8) are given. The results obtained for the formation enthalpy of Mool and MoC12 are compared with the data previously obtained (Ref- 5) by tie authors for MoCl and MOC14 I as well as with the results obtained by Brewer (Ref. 1) (Table 9) . The preliminary results calculated for the formation enthalpy of MoCl 3 and MOC12 are -93 4 kcal/mole and -69 5 kcal/mole. There are 1 figure, 9 tables, and 12 references, 5 of which are Soviet.
