TITLE: Investigation of the Extraction of the Phosphomolybdic Acil (Izucheniye ekstragirovaniya fosfornomolibdenovoy kisloty~ PERIODICAL: Izvestiya vysshikh uchebnykh zavedeniy. 1himiya i khimichesi:uya tekhnologiya, 1959, Vol 2, !Tr 2, PP 157-160 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The subject mentioned in the title is interesting for the colorimetric determination of small phosphorus quanti-tie S/ as well as for the separation of phosphorus and silicon (Refs 1-3). The extraction is connected with the solubility of the substances in corresponding solvents; from this point of view, the acid mentioned in the title (PhMA) is very poor- ly investigated. The following problems are particularly ini- portant: The distribution coeffielent K distr.~ Corg : Cwat must be equal to the ratio of.the solubility values of the corresponding substance in the organic solvent and in rater (C org and Cwat representing the concentration of this substance in the organic solvent and in water, respectively, under various conditions of equiUbri-um between them). It is further known that Phr.1A with butariol-1 can be completely extracted in prac- tice from the aqueous solution& Consequently, there must be Card 1/3 a great difference between the PhMA-state in water and in SOV/153-2-2-2/31 Investigation of the Extraction of the Phosphomolybdic.Acid butanol. There are, howeverg-few numerical data in.publication,'~ on this noint. At the beginning, the.experimenta concerning the PhY-A-solubility in water and in butanol-I are describ-ed. The values of its solubility were described. Subsequently, the extraction of PhAIA with butanol-lis-dealt with. On the basis of the results obtained in samples of the aqueous and non-aqueous phases, the distribution-coefficie-nts (Fig 1) were computed. The results show a strong and rather peculiar depen- dence of the PhMA-distribution on its concentration: at an equilibrium concentration of the PhUf in the aqueous phase not higher than 0.3 m, a stratif-ication is formed: the ratio of the Phl-JA-concentrations is, in both phases, near the solub- ility ratios in the correspondin.- solvents. The value of the distribution coefficient is slightly changed by a threefold dilution. A further dilution produces a very strong increase in the distribution coefficient (Fig it Curve 2"-. At the equilibriLum concentration of 0.1-0.01 m, the PhKA-state 2.z changed in one of the phases, most likely in the aqueous p1hase. By measuring the electric conductivity of the PhMA-solution in water and in butanol, it was ascertained that seemingly the molecular form of PhMA is mainly extracted. This circum- Card 2/3 stance may account for the reduced extractability of PhLU in SOV/1 53-2-2-2/131 Investi.-ation of the Extraction of the Phosplomaiybdic Acid dilutions below 0-004 m. Here nam-ely, in the aqueous phase, it passes, for the most part, from the molecular into the ionic form. It is much more difficult to eXDlain the increase in the distribu-tion coefficient at the concen"-at-on change of 0.1 - 0.01 m. Apparently, there is no other explana- tion than that of a PhMA-polymerization in concentrated solli- tions. In fact, particularly the monomeric PhM-A-forms are soluble in butanol (Ref 5)- On the basis of the above data, an extraction scheme of PhMA in water and in butanol is put forward. In the presence of nitric acid and sodium nitrate, the PhYA-distribution coefficient rises by about 350 times (Figs 2, 3). There are 3 figures~and 5 references, 4 of which are Soviet. TITLE: Determination of niobium and titanium as triple complexes with phosphomolybdic acid I~ERIODICAL: Zhurnal analiticheskoy khimii, V".18, no.2, 1963, .196-201 TEXT: Ti and Nb react with phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) with MoO4:PO4 = 2 in an acid medium (pHl ) forming phosphotitano- molybdic and phosphoniobomolybdic complexes (PTMC and PNMC, respectively). The sensitivity of the reaction is 51Lg Ti or IO)ig Nb in 25 nil of solution. It has previously been shown that the stability of the three heteropolycomplexes increases in the order: PMA, PTMC, PNMC. The effect of various complex forming materials (oxalate, citrate, complexone III, fluoride, phosphate and molybdate) on the three complexes has been studied to find new methods of determining Ti and Nb, based on the different stability of the complexes. PMA, acidified by nitric acid to CHN03 = 2.8 N is destroyed tan times quicker than PTMC and fifty times quicker than PMIC. If small quantities of Card 1/2 S/075/63/ol8/002/006/oog Determination of niobium ... E195/E436 molybdate are added, only PNMC and no PMA is formed. This makes possible the determination of Ni. Although of different stability, the three complexes are equally destroyed by oxalate, complexone II and citrate; fluoride destroys the heteropoly- complexes in the order: PMA, PnfC, PNMC. This factor can be used for determination of Ti and Nib in the form of heteropolycomplexes. It is possible to determine niobium in the presence of titanium on the basis of a more rapid destruction of the phosphotitanomolybdic' complex with fluoride, followed'by the extraction of the remaining phosphoniobomolybdic complex with butanol-1. Tantalum does not Uurn yellow with the phosphomolybdic reagent. A method has been suggested for the determination of niobium in the presence of tantalum. There are 9 figures. With excess molybdate in the solution (in PTHC the P:TL:Mo concentra- tioa is 1:1:12) the equilibrium is shifted in the direction of P7MC formatioao Almost complete separation ol' titanium is effected with 0.02-0,04 M molybdate (fig. 1). The extraction of Ti as PTMC is applicable to the separation of Ti from elements which interfere with its pigmentation (Cr III, Cu 11, Ni J1, Co II, Card 1/5 ACCESSION NR: AP4019~07 Mn II, MnOZ); to fhe separation of Ti from elements which react with reagents for Ti (Fe III, Al III, Pb II, Ta V, Rf IV); and to the concentration of Ti from dilute solutions. The effect of the time and the temperature of the reaction on the formation of the phosphomolybdate reagent is shown in fig. 2; the effect of acidity is shown in fig. 3. It is possible to separate PTMC and a phosphomolyb- denum complex (PMC) by means of n-butyl acetate. With a 0.5 N acid concentration, 99.6% of PMC goes into the organic phase while 97% of the PTHC remains in the aqueous phase. The best extractant for PTMC*is a mixture of 1-pentanol and cyclahexanol in a 2:1 volume ratio. Using 6 ml of this mixture it is possible, by a one-, two-, and three-fold extraction, to extract 82, 93, and 99% of titanium from 250 ml of a 1 N acid solution. By adding-6 ml of chloroform to the extract in the presence of 0.1 N H2SO4, titanium can be quantitatively stripped into the aqueous phase. The sensitivity of Ti determination is 0.01 microgram/ml when the optical density is measured at 313 millimicrons. Orig. art. has: 2 tables and 6 figures. In acid media, PMC forms colored pre- cipitates with the following BD: crystal violet, methyl violet, basic brilliant green, malachite green, auramine, iodine green, rhodamine 6G, neutral red, safra- nine, toluldine blue. A study of the extraction of PMC-BD compounds by eighteen UDC- 543.70 .Card 1/2 L 2_3143-66 ACC NR: AP6006941 organic solvents of various categories showed alcohols and ketones to be the best ex- Itracting agents. In determining phosphorus with BD, it is necessary to separate ex- ~cess molybdate from PMC; the extract can be separated completely from the molybdate by washing twice with nitric acid at pH 1.5. The calculation of inlet geometry, however, presents several difficulties, since it involves flow deflection from the radial to th axial direction and the effect on he shafl-W flow structure of the wake caused by t . At-the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute im. M. 1. Kalinin, the flow of an inviscid incompressible fluid was studied by an electro-hydrodynamic-analog method using a wooden model impregnated: with paraffin, copper plate electrodes, graphite probes, and diluted H,S04 as an electrolyte for determining the flow field. The results showed that the velocity field was highly nonuniform so that an inlet designed according to present design recommendations is inadequate. Further experiments were made with an annular inlet having the form of a helical chamber. From the total and static pressure measure- Card 1/2 L 110'5o-66 ACC t AT6001025 ments, pressure distribution curves were obtained and several conclusions concerning- the inlet geometry were drawn. It is shown that impellers should be designed with a linear change in the cross sec" tional area with respect to channel length to improve flow characteristics. The num- ber of blades should be selected on the basis of the optimum apex angle for the channels between blades, Experimental investigation of a large number of single-stage impellers with exit angles of 20, 49 and 900 showed that optimum impelle s from the standpoint of maximum efficiency have 8-12, 16-18 and 28 or more bladeeleBpectively. However, stability is reduced with an increase in the number of blades so that two- Card L 45973-66 ACCINRI AT6026436 staZe cascades are preferable for high-efficiency impellers with a large number of blades. Recommendations are made for optimalizing the operation parameters of various types of centrifugal compressors on the basis of recent experimental research. Orig. art. has: 6 figures. JThe~.~inal duct contour is selected only after testing and modifications of models. Since the development of calculation methods for compressor .inlet ducts is quite difficult., the Leningra4 Polytechnic Institute MPI) has conducted systematic experimental investigations of a series ,'of centrifugal compressor inlet ducts.
