TITLE~ Concrete of the future

TEXT: Intensive research on concrete with polymer admixture has
been conducted in the Soviet Union in recent years. The polymer
concrete consists of an inorganic binder (cement), an organic
binder
(synthetic resin) and a filler (sand .. asbestos, sawdust
etc.). Many
properties of concrete can be improved by addition of polymers:
The
addition of rubber latex increases the elasticity and the
vibration-
and shock-absorbing capacity of concretes. The addition of poly-
vinyl-acetate emulsion to fresh concrete improves the binding
capa-
city to set concrete; the adhesion of concrete to the
reinforcing
steeli and the bending and impact strength. The addition of
poly- _,X
vinyl alcohol makes concrete more impervious to water.
Copolymers
containing polyvinylchloride, polyacrylates or polymethacrylates
produce concretes which are highly resistant to fats and oils,

pervious to water, elastic, and frost-resistant, Some Soviet
labora-
tories investigated the properties of standard 1:3 cement-sand
mortars with a varying admixture-ratio of polyvinyl-acetate
emulsion
to determine the influence of the polymer on the properties of
con-
crete, and the optimum polymer-admixture ratio. It was found that
great strengths of concrete can be reached by addition of a poly-
vinyl-acetate emulsion stabilized with polyvinyl alcohol (bending
strength 3 times, impact strength 5 times and compression strength
40% higher than those of conventional concrete). By addition of a
dibutylphthalate plasticizer to polyvinyl acetate, the impact
strength increased but the bending and tensile strengths were
reduc-
ed. Polymer-cement concretes with admixture of B-emulsion set
faster than cement-sand mortars. Other Soviet laboratories
investi-
gated a polymer-cement concrete type which could be used for con-
struction and repair of airfields. A 50% aqueous emulsion of poly-
vinyl acetate was mixed with cement in a proportion of 1:3; the
cement-to-sand ratio being lt4. Calcium chloride was used as har-
dener which accelerated the setting so that the concrete could be

walked on 24 hours after laying. Its bending strength was 8 times
higher than that of conventional concrete. Steam--curing of this
concrete type is not recommended. In searching for a water-imper-
vious concrete suitable for hydraulic constructions, Soviet
resear-
chers tested a concrete with addition of furfuryl alcohol. They
added 5? kg furfuryl alcohol and 8.5 kg aniline hydrochloride to 1
m3 of coperete mixture containing 334 kg cement and 134 kg water.
Due to the effects of the aniline salt, the furfuryl alcohol poly-
merizes under siiultaneous hydration of the cement, whereby the
pores
are sealed. At the same time a good adhesion of the polymer to the
cement crystals and the filler material is achieved. This concrete
is impervious to water up to 80 atmospheres, and can be used for
pipes and reservoirs of oil pipelines, and other purposes. At the
present time, the use of polymer-cement concrete is limited due to
the scarcity of polymers. It is, therefore, desirable to develop
inexpensive polymers and build adequate production facilities.
