~ayev. Vice-president of this Academy is Dzhumagul Alysh-

~ayev. Another name.to be mentioned is that of the Academ-

ician
Begimaly Dzham'gerchinov who is a Doctor of listoricia

Sciences
and wrote the comprehensive work "The History of

Kirghiziall
(Istoriya Kirgizii). Discoveries of mineral de-

posits in the
Kirghiz SSR have helped to promote the develop-

ment and expansion
of the national economy. The creation of

powerful energy resources
are of decisive importance for this

purpose. Therefore, the
scientists of he Academy of Sciences

have concentrated their
studies on the vast power resources

of the Naryn river in the
Central Tyan' Shan'. Preliminary

studies have shown, that it will
be possible to construct

the basin of this river with a capacity of about

stations would thus form the basis for the eastern section of
the Qdfied Power System of Central Asia and South Kazakhstan.
Anotber point in the research program of the Academy of
Sciences
Is the useful exploitation of loess in the Kirghiz SSR. 7he
most
important task,, however, is to promote the development of
agri-
culture, a.g. to find adequate pastures for cattle in the
mountains,
to increase their product'ivity, etc. Another problem is the
control
of soil erosion in the Issyk-Kh1l oblast' and in the Central
Tyan'-
Sha"'. In the fixture, the program of the Kirghiz keademy of
Sciences wLU be intensified, the staff will. be enlarged
from 800
to 1,700 members, and now scientific institutes will be
established.
At present, the academy includes 9 institutes and several
other
scientific eistablisbments.

The economic
development of the Kirghiz SSB within the new

7-Year Plan
period will be concentrated in the chemical

industry,
construction material industry, speeding-up of

electrification, a further expansion of the coal and,

especially, oil and gas production, scientific prospecting

and the opening of new raw material resources. New techno-

logical processes have to be brought into being in the
non-

ferrous and rare metal industries, the scientific
principles

for the introduction of automation and
telemechanization of

industrial processes must be worked
out, methods must be

found to obtain high-molecular
compounds from local raw

materials, the chemistry of the
Republic's flora should be

studies intensely, rational
principles for the building of

hydrotechnical structures
are to be worked out, and alloys

studied for new
applications. A general theory of integral

and differential equations must be worked out for the estab-
lishment and solution of technical problems. Acclimatiza-
tion of new plants, extension of sugar beet, fruit and
grape cultivation and breeding of sheep with fine and semi-
coarse fleeces are major tasks for the agricultural sector.
Further important fields to be more closely investigated
are soil melioration, parasitology, etiology of endemic
diseases, local geography and mapping. Between 1959 and
1965 the Republic's AS will establish six more institutes,
two independent departments and several new laboratories.
