ABSTRACT: A sample of snow was placed in a refrigerator, where
its temperature went down to -200C in 40 to- 50 minutes.
Next, the sample was placed in an apparatus for de-
termining the coefficient of linear snow expansion.
The apparatus consisted of a metal trough filled with
mercury, One end of the sample was held motionless,
but the other end was free to move along a metal wire
held taut by p we.ight.' An indicator was attached

indicate expansion of the sample on an immovable scale. At the same
time the temperature of the sample was changed with the help of a
thermocouple. The temperature of the laboratory was -10 to -30CP
and the temperature in the apparatus was the same. In the course of
the experiment the temperature of the sample was raised and the
sample expanded.

TOPIC TAGS: frequency diYision, frequency divider, microwave frequency

ABSTRACT: An experimental investigation of a two-circuit parametric frequency
divider for the 3-cm wavelength band is reported. The divider operates as an
oscillator that mutually synchronizes the oscillations. The coaxial 1,800-2,500-
mc circuit is coupled to the 6,800-7, 500 mc waveguide circuit by means of a
nonlinear -capacitance germanium diode (see Enclosure 1). The 9, 300-mc
pumping power was fed to the lOxZ3-mm waveguide. At a power exceeding 10 or
15 mw, parametric oscillations were excited in the two circuits with frequencies

whose sum was equal to the pumping frequency. Division rati P*s of 4 and 5 were
attained. The microwave divider differs from the same type Pf divider for lower
frequpncieB in that the former employs a much stronger coupling between the t*o
oscillatory circuits. "The authors are Indebted to Yu. A. Kiavtsov and Y, N.

TITLE: Influence of Deafferentation of the Anterior Lobe of Hypophysis
oii the Secretory Cycle in Its Cell Constituents
PERIODICAM Doklady-Akademii nauk SSSRp 19594 Vol 128, Nr 3P pp 611-613
(USSR)
ABSTRACT: The author ascertained (paper being printed in the Izvestiya
AN SSSR, Biological Series) that the secretory cycle pasues
through 4 consecutive stages in the basophilio and oxyphilic
cells of the lobe mentioned in the title, These stages are
morphologically similar to corresponding stages of the
secretory cycle in the cells of exocrinic glands (Refs 79 11)-
The basophilic and oxyphilic cells differ from each ~ttbex with
respect to the mechanism of secretion% in the basophilic celley
the secretory granulae are dissolved by the plasm vacuolization
so that they are secreted in a liquid state. The cytoplasm
dilution in the oxyphiliccells is not so pronouncedg and does
not play an important part in the mechanism of secretion.
Seore-tion mostly ocoure by degranulation of the granular
CarT1 1/3 cytoplasm. In the present paper, the author investigated the
Influence of Deafferentation of the Anterior Lobe of SOV/20-128-'3-49/58
Hypophysis on the Secretory Cycle in Ito Cell Constituents
influence of sensorial denervation (deafferentation) on the
morphology of the seoretory cycle in both types of cells. The
author ascertained that the anterior lobe of hypophysis is
supplied with sensorial nerve fibers by the neurons of the
upper cervical spinal cord ganglia (Cl-C 3). The removal of
these ganglia causes a complex of morphological changes in the
anterior lobe as they are characteristic of every deafferentated
organ (Refs 4-6). The experiments wore carried out on male cats.
The first 3 nerve ganglia mentioned were removed on both sides.
The animals were killed 1, 2, 5, 8, 11, 15, 20, 27, 40, 98, 1009
123, 129, and 180 days after this operation..Figures 1 and 2
show the above-mmentioned vaouclization of the basophilic cells.
On the basis of his results, the author arrives at the
following conolusi6ns: The deafferentation of the anterior lobe
of hypophysis acts upon the secretory process of the basophilic
and oxyphilic cells in a specific way. This action disturbs
the mechanism of secretion peculiar to these cells. In the
basophilic cells, excessive liquid flows into the cytoplasm.
This hinders the liquid secretion from the cell. In the

oxyphilic cells, the prevention of secretion causes a
homogenization of the granular oytoplasmo and subsequently the
death of the cells, A paper by Yu# A. Zrazhevskaya (Ref 7-) on
this subject is mentioned. There are 2 figures and i1

ABSTRACT: A new method for determining Al in bronzes with a large Pb
content is suggested. A I-gram specimen is dissolved in a mix-
ture of acids, successive action by NH40H and pyridine precipi-
tate A1203, the precipitate is dissolved by hot 2% H?_S04, and the
resultant solution is subjected to electrolysis at the Hg cathode,
K4 [Fe(CN)6] and K3 f.Fe(CN)6,] being used to check the com-
pleteness with which the impurities precipitating together withthe
AlZ03 have been separated out. On conclusion of electrolysis the
Al is precipitated by oxyqWnbline, the precipitate is dissolved in

methylred, KI and starch are added, and titration with Na2S203 follows until
color disappears, whereupon careful titration with bromide-bromate solution
is repeated until a blue tint appears. The method permits precise determina-
tion of small amounts of Al. The use of the Geyrovskiy polarograph under
shop conditions is described. The galvanometer and the light source are
placed in a wooden housing with a 30-cm slot on the path of the beam to the
drum; a visual scale is mounted at an angle of 450 to the beam. The.housing
makes it possible to work in a light room and protects the instrument against
dust and disturbance of its focus. Visual readings agree to within 0.25 mm.

ABSTRACT: Some authors (Ref.112) state that the magnitude of the grid re-
sistor R. limits the leakage current thru the separating capaci-
tor Cc. powever, this is not correct, since the insulation resis-
'Lance of-the capacity depends on its capacitance. For a certain
amplifier characteristic at low frequencies, the time constant
'rc=RCCt.is ti-constant magnitude. The amount of anode voltage en-
tering he grid'of the following stage depends only on the ratio
of the capacitor insulation constant and the time constant of the
ReCc circuit but by no means om the magnitude Re itself. The pub-
lication of this article was recommended by the Kafedra telchniche-

TEXT: An automatic lapping-machine (Raf. 1 the present
author - Author's Certificate no. 115045, Byulleten' izo-
breteniy, 1958, no. 9, 74) was designed for the lapAing of
Zlat-parallel plates used in the-manufacture of semiconductors.
The accuracy of the system is + 2 ~ and the parallelism of the
circular rotating lapping elem~_ents is controlled by an elec-
tronic system., The sh&ft of the lower lapping plate is fixed,
rLile, the shaft of the upper one is attached to a tripod
positioned on three hydraulic cylinders. The position of the
shaft in space is controlled by three inductive transducers.
A tranducer consists of a fixed fork-shaped core made of
permalloy, 1 cm cross-sectionwith a coil and a fixed disc

connected to the shaft of the upper lapping plate. The
clearance between the plate and the disc is 3 mm. The
inductances of the transducers together with fixed capacitances
form the resonance circuit of three stable oscillators. When
the oscillators operate under identical conditions (ident 'ical
anplitudes and frequencies) a parallel movement of the upper
lapping plate produces identical frequency changes in all three
oscillators. If the displacement is not parallel, the
differences in the frequency deviations can be used for
correcting the position of the lapping plate. The actual system
employed for determining the frequency difference is based on
phase comparators, so that the error in comparing the frequencies
is extremely small, On the other hand, synchronism of the
syste.m can be maintained only provided that the differenre
frequency changes are very slow. This can be achieved by a
suitable choice of operating frequency and clearance. The
system has the additional advantage that it works extremely
accurately or not at all (falls out of synchronism). The block
schematic of the system is shown in Fig. 1. It is se4m that the

resonance circuits LC (where L are the inductances of tile
transducers) are connected with the three oscillators F ,
whose frequencies are compared in pairs in the phase comparators
ullich form a ring. It is desirable under these conditions
0
to maintain phase differences of 120 between the oscillators.
It is thus necessary to eriploy additional phase-shiftina
networks L~ I so as to provide voltages shifted by 90 to the
pliase conipazators. Under these conditions the polarized relays
PI, P2 and P- (+--I)e Fn-5 (RP-5) are closed. The relays
.~P
operate the valves X , -t-rhich-control the oil in the hydraulic
cylifiders. The oscillators operate at frequencles of 800 -
900 c.p.s. and should be very stable. The above system is
employed in production where it can maintain the parallelism of
an operating surface of 22 x 22 mm to within 1.3 mm
Abstracter's note: probably 11 IL Ill. This indicates that the
iase-comparison method can be successfully employed in
R
automation systems where a high degree of accuracy and stability
is required. There are 2 figures.
