It is pointed out that the desiGn of the dis+11lation equipment
,-.Z-and the throughput capacity of distillation colums are important in
installations for the production of liquid oxygen, specifically stand-
--.~,.ard USSR installations for that purpose. The capacity of standard
.-USSR oxygen production units is given as 15,000 cubic meters of 02 per
hour. A type of installation with double that capacity is said to be
the development stage. The efficiency of distillation columns in
the separation of 02-N2 end 02 - Ar - N2 mixtures is discussed in detail.*.*
~...'Phis is followed by a discussion of the design of distillation coli=s
and particularly of the type of plates to be used in them. In accord-
ance with standard USSR practice in this type of application, sieve
plates are regarded as preferable to bubble cap plates because of their..
cheapness and low resistance to over-all flow and also because imperfect,
'drainage from bubble cap plates may give rise to the accumulation of

sieve plates of different designs and with plate diameters ranginL

plates are arranged at distances of 43-120 millimeters in the coluums.
-Installation of barriers to ensure even flow on large sieve plates is
recommended. Ring-shaped sieve plates vith radial barriers and inde-

used in the fractionation of liquid air. The results reported in the

is cooled. This, in turn, cools the air in scrubber II. This
scheme is not sufficient for additional cooling in high-
pressure =its. There, scrubber I is replaced by a nitrogen-
water cooler of the KGN-30T type. The calculation given by
Professo~r, L. D. Berman (Ref 2) of the heat exchange taking
place is here replaced by a simplified procedure, It takes
place by the aid of the enthalpy temperature diagram, of
nitrogen or air at 100?-,. relative humidity, For the pressure
of I atm. the values of enthalpy may be found in the psychro-
metric tables (Refs 2 and 3). From the enthalpy temperature
diagram and the load lines, that are theoretically calculated
from the heat balnnee of the individual scrubbersp or from
the values of entropy and temperature recorded at the outlet
and inlet points of the scrubbers, the number of theoretical
plates in the scrubber ntAcan be determined by the gradient
method. (Fig 3). The number of required plates in apparatus

from the useful effect i of the plates accordin.i- to the

Investigations conducted by VNIIKnWh on the useful effect
of individual plates'were carried out with an industrial
model of nitrogen-water coolerfor the KGN-30T. The mean
value of the useful effect k amounted to 0-5- It was also
found that on diminishing tHe water conSUMDtion for cooling
the cooling performance of the scrubber can be maintained
only by increasing the number of plates. The nitrogen-water
cooler of the above type effects a cooling of from 50 to
5-100 by a simple control of the water quantity supplied.

TITLE- Conditions for Regular Work with Cupola Bottoms
(Usloviya ravnomernoy raboty kolpachkovykh tarelok)
PERIODICAL: Khimicheskaya promyshlennost', 1959, Nr 3, pp 64-79 (USSR)
A13STRACT: In recent times several papers on the conditions necessary for
a regular effervescence in columns with bottoms have been
examined (Refs 1-5, 8-12), and among other things it is stated
that an increase of the gas supply changes the irregular
effervescence into a regular one by using the whole bottom
area. The inveatigation results are given with regard to the
reasons for an irregular action of cupola bottome and the
conditions for a regular effervescence which took place In the
air - water sycluem. The experiments were carried out on a unit
specially designed, where canal bottoms (CB) and bottoms with
round cupolas (BC) were examined, as well as (CB) of a
fractioning column for pyrogases designed according to the
standards of the NIlkhimmash (Ref 6). In the case of the (BC)
Card 1/2 the experiments proved that the observations described in
Conditions for Regular Work with Cupola Bottoms SOV/64-59-3-14/24
publications (Refs 10-12) were right, in the case of the (CB)
a different character of irregularity was observed. A sketch
of a (CB) is given (Fig 3) and the occurring irregular
effervescence is explained by this sketch. An analogy is
stated between the character of the function of the relative
specific weight of the gas emulsion, the speed of the gas
stream and the height of the liquid layer in (BC) and the grid
bottoms. The derivation of the equation (15) is given for
on Uting the gas speed at which a regular effervescence of the
1 -is initiated. Together with the explanations of the reasons
BC
(
for an irregular effervescence on the bottoms it is mentioned
that the supposition (Refs 10-12) of a promoted overrunning is
wrong. Finally some calculation examples and the corresponding
data are given by'means of a (CB) of a water cooling scrubber
of the oxygen plant BR-5. There are 8 figures and 12 refer-
enoes, 9 of which are Soviet.

TEXT: The principal problems related to th6 freezing-out of moisture and
carbon dioxide in air-fractionating apparatus were studied experimentally. Two
testing devices were used to investigate the effect of the temperature difference
between the gas to be cooled and the cooling wall on the freezing-out process at
atmospheric pressure and at pressures of up to 7 atm. The device used for exper-
iments at atmospheric pressure featured a central copper tube, through which the
cooling air was passed. The air to be cooled was passed through a glass tube be-
ing concentric with the copper tube. The two tubes were placed inside a glass

vacuum tube. The steam was frozen out on the external wall of the copper tube,
the cooling air having been previously reduced to the desired temperature by
means of liquid air. The other device, intended for experiments with 7 atm, was
similar in design, its tubeG being of copper. In low-pressure experiments the
temperature of the air to be cooled ranged between 12 and 18*C at the entrance,
and between +2.0 and -51.10C at the exit. The air speeds were between 3.15 and
0.84 iA/sec. The Reynolds number.ranged between 3,620 and 12,820. The tempera-
ture differences between gas and cold wall ranged between 18 and 145*C at the hot
end, and between 13 and 115 0 at the cold end of the apparatus. The dew points
ranged between +3 and -18.6*C at the entrance, and between -6.2 and -310C at the
exit. In high-pressure experiments the air temperatures ranged between 3,6 and
10.3*C at the entrance, and between -22.0 and -29.4'C at the exit. Air speeds
and Reynolds numbers were about the same as in low-pressure experiments. The
temperature differences between gas and cold wall ranged between 23.8 and 37 .C at
the hot end, and between 19 and 40.20C at the cold end of the apparatus. The dew
points ranged between -4.6 and -32.10C at the entrance, and between -28.4 and
-34.20C at the exit. No crystal formation could be expected in the case of tem-
perature differences of less than 300C between gas and celd wall. Crystals were

Inst of Ccmnlnal 1~y~giene
"Gig i San" No 4P pp 19-24
Studies amount of contamination caused by oxidation of sulfur compounds in waste
rock and coal of the dump at three mines of Stalinsk Oblast in 1948. Degree of
sulfur dioxide formation depends on chemical composition of rock and coal', height
of pile, period of time pile has existed, meteoroligical conditions, and other
factors* Under most favorable factors for oxidation increased concentrations of
adfur dioxide in the air were found up to radius of 1,500 Meterse UndW I*" favor-
abU conditions, Limit was radius of 750 motern, Protective zone required bet6reen
dump and living quarters should be 500-1j, 5W motors, depending on intensity of oxida.
tion, direction of prevallin winds, and chemical cmposition of pile* Includes
table and 3 figures.
