the rat pancreas. Four weeks after castration, the water
and fat content of the livers of male rats was reduced, and

ABSTRACT: The author stateb that although China is rich in
mineral, oil and natural gas resources, the American petroleum
monopolists always tried to hinder the search for petroleum in
China and the development of petroleum production. They brought
forth the theory that its geological aonditions precluded the
possibility of there being any petroleum reservoirs. However,
under communist rule the search for petroleum developed and it
was found that such regions as Szi--chwan, Chiuchuan, Dzhungaria
and Tsaidain have either oil or natural gas deposits. Petroleum
production in China was initiated by the Ministry of Petroleum.
Industry, Well organized settlements for oilmen have now been
built in different parts of the country. Often :Ghe climatic

The photograph, taken by the author, shows how a gusher trans-

ABSTRACT: The simulation of a homeostatic system with the aid of a BESM-2 high-speed
electronic discrete-action computer is described. The homeostatic system consists of three
uni'ts. The values of the independent and dependent variable parameters as well as of con-
stant parameters are determined by means of a random-number generator. The initial con-
ditions for displacing the system from the zero position also are specified by means of the
random-number generator. The performance of the entire experiment, including preliminary
experiments with elaboration of the program for the computer, took -80 min of machine time.

ABSTRACT: The author states that the correct determination of
the time needed to complete a certain operation opens
a broad possibility of increasing the productivity
of labor. Therefore, the introduction of correct labor
time-schedule based on practical experience is very
important. Unfortunately, the time-schedule included in
the manual for drillers contains a wamber of errors and
is not always based on correct principles. It is known
to be easier to lower the liquid level in the drill

column by using a plunger pump than by using a sand pump. The
time-schedule does not make any difference in this respect.
Moreover, it takes much more time to lower the liquid level
in a 10-in. column than in an 8-in. column. In spite of this
the time allowed by the time-schedule for completion of both
operations is the same. The Author points out that the cal-
culation of time was exclusively based on the liquid level
depth without taking into account other factors such as the
diameter of the drill col=mi. In the opinion of the author
those who computed the timet-schedule had only a vague idea
of drilling operations. Due to errors in computing the time
necessary for completion of certain operat.lons, drilling
enterprises are sometimes compelled to use less effective
methods to complete a job because the time allowed by the
schedule for a more effective method is not correct. The
author recommends revision of the time-schedule and issuance
of supplementary regulations to correct the errors made
in the computation of the obligatory time-schedule included

ABSTRACTs To determine the solubility under isothermal conditions some
parallel experiments must be carried nut simultaneously, for
wh-i-,h purpose the usual thermostat TS - 15 is not suited. F'or
this reason a thermostat with a special inset was constructed,
the design of which is given. In principle this inset consists
of'a metallic heat-insulated cohtainer in which six vessels are
located. The latter have one stirrer each whereas a seventh stir-
rer stirs the container. The stirrers are driven by an electro-
motor by way of a mechanism which secures a simultaneous, equal
revolution. A schematic representation of the thermostat plant,
as constructed by the Engineers P.I. Mishkin and A 1. Natman, is
given. The temperature

TEXT: In analysing the properties of condensing phases, -
knowledge i's required about the molecular composition of vapdur
above the surface of a solid or liquid substance, compound or
solution. This article describes a device which analyses the
velocity of molecules evaporated in a chamber. The chamber is
located below two coaxial rotating discs the lower of which,
made of dural, carries four radial slots ranging in width from
0.3 to 2.40. The vaporized material is deposited on the upper
disc of polished transparent plastic, the deposit density
distribution depends on the molecular velocity in the vapour.'
The vapour composition and the vaporization factors of fractions
of different molecular composition may be calculated from the
velocity distribution by a formula similar to that of O.Stern
(Ref.2: Z. Phys., v.41, 1927, 563). The discs are 180 nun diamet6r

and the distance between tham may'range from 70 to 180 mm;
they are driven at speeds up to 15000 rpm, the speed being
measured by comparing the frequency of signals picked up from a
photo cell illuminated through the slots against a standard
audio-frequency generator. The substance contained'in a
cylindrical tantalum crucible is vaporized in a small electric
furnace with molybdenum heaters and the molecular beam passes
through the lower disc and two collimator slots before reaching
the upper disc. The density of deposit on the upper disc is
measured by a photo cell photome er. The e uIpment is
evacuated to a vacuum of 5 x 10 to 1 x 1 mm Hg by a vacuum
