In the CIA Historical Staff, Semiannual Report, July-December 1971, the Bay of Pigs episode is mentioned as a major action of CIA which should be given historical treatment in the ongoing program of the Agency. 2. I wish now to urge that work be started on such a history, broadly planned and executed and based on full documentation, as an all-Agency history, directly under the Historical Staff, and that David McLean be named to write it. 25X1A9a 3. Mr. - has recently completed the draft of a history of Western Hemisphere Division and is presently en a ed in completing in draft form a history of the He is scheduled to retire in June 1973; suf .icien time to have the account of the' Bay of Pigs well underway. He could then complete it either as an independent contractor or he might have his retirement deferred. Mr. would welcome such. an assignment. H.. M.
