PURPOSE: The book is written in a semipopular style and is addressed to readers
interested in Soviet exploration of the Arctic.
COVERAGE: The book reviews Soviet exploration and achievements in the Arctic during
the last 40 years. The author discusses navigation in Arctic waters, search and

PERIODICAL: Priroda, 1958, Nr 4. pp 87-90 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The article deals with volcanic activity on the bottom of
the Arctic Ocean as discovered by members of the Soviet
scientific research station SP-3, which drifted on an ice
floe in the area above the Lomonosov mountain range near
the North Pole. In the Arctic Ocean, the seismic belt is
located near the Lomonosov mountain range, and there are
indications that there is also some volcanic activity in
the range itself. On November 21, 1956, at 1230 hours,
the inhabitants of station SP-5 were alerted by a heavy
shock. It was followed by three other still stroneer
quakes at night. On November 24, l9rj6, a loud noise was
heard and the ice floe burst in two halves. At the same time
a strong smellof hydrogen sulfide was noted which almost
poisoned one member of the expedition. The author con-
cludes that the ice floe must have broken due to an under-

have caused a gas bubble to rise to the surface. Such a
possible eruption on the sea bottom is of special interest
to science as it ic thefirst of itskind observed near the
North Pole. Investigations of the bottom deposits in that
area obtained in 1949, 1950 and 1954 by the Arkticheskiy
institut (The Arctic Institute) show that they contain ex-
tensive quantities of volcanic glass, suggesting -volcanic
activity in that area.

ABSTRACT: 1,1entioning the now wide-spread, experimental method of la-
boratory "modelling" for geological rezearch g.urposes, and
the research of the scientists D.S. Belyanking V.V. Belousov
and A.V. Peyve in this field, the author states that i.--e is
the ideal material for such a modellin6.-, and that the best
conditions in this case are created by nature itself. He
describes a number of tests demonstrated by nature and in-
vestigated by various scientists. In this connection, the
experiments carried out in the laboratory of the Arkticheskiy

search Institute) under Engineer M.K. Tarshis are mentioned.

Proskuryakov, P.P. Kobeko, N.1. Demlyanov. The author reaches
the conclusion that some phenomena, neglected up to now in
scientific studies, could play a substantial role in forming
the relief of the ice crust, e.g. mounds of ice swelling
which were observed by him in 1956 in the Greenland Sea,
and which in the magnitude of their occurrence proved to be
also characteristic of the surface of the ice crust (the for-
mation of its relief has formerly been ascribed only to ice
pack). Several peculiarities in the formation and transfor-
mation of the relief of the ice crust are the result' of the
action of tangential and vertical "tectonic" forces, and are of
scientific interest not only in connection with ice research, 'but

TEXT: The areas of the Siberian Platform and Canadian Shield are
characterized by extreme values of the intensity of the earthts magnetic
field. The sources of such magnetic anomalies should be sought in the
abyssal crustal layers or even in the substratum beneath the crust. This
point of view is confirmed by magnetometric data obtained from the third
Soviet satellite. The East Siberian (and 0also the Canadian) energy centc--,
is situated at the intersection of the 62 critical parallel with the
1050E - 750W critical meridian. In accordance with the geotectonic pulsal-

tion hypothesis, proposed by V. A. Obruchev, special tectonic Oonditims
are created under the influence of the earth's variable volume and its
consequently irregular rotation along cortain definite ciroles--the oriT~i-
cal parallels and critical meridianu~ This conception as a result ol,
geophysical observations accomplished by means of Soviet satellites has
received additional confirmation. It is established that the conteit oi.
atomic nitrogen in the ionosphere with respect to atomic. oxygen varies
from 1 to 10% depending on the altitude and geographic latitude. A sharp-
ly increased concentration of ions of atomic nitrogen at heights of 226 -
260 Ian is observed around 600N. The intensity of roentgen radiation in
the outer zone of heightened cosmic radiation increased abruptly in the
belt of the 55 0- 650parallels of ihe northern and southern geomagnetic
latitudes. According to the data of American satellites, high
intensity was detected at the equator in the inner zone of increased radia,
tion. Soviet research in Eastern Antarctica has shown that in the a-ravi-,

TEXT: The paper analyzes data presented by Academician A. N. Nesmeyanov
at the general assembly of the AS USSR in March 1959 to generalize the concept of
critical parallels of latitude to the ionosphere. Satellite observations have shown
that all ionospheric components depend significantly on.the geographic or geomag-
netic latitude. Thus, the atomic-N ion content at heights of 226-260 km grows
sharply near 60ON (the extremal parallel in the lithosphere is 610). The atomic-
N to atomic-O ratio in the ionosphere varies (from 1 to 10%) with height, latitude,
and time. In the outer zone of intense cosmic radiation, the X-ray intensity grows
sharply in the 55-650N and S latitude belts, whe'reas the higher latitudes, up to
the poles, are free of X-rays. In the inner zone of intense radiation a high inten- A
sity occurs at the equator. Sputnik-M data at about 1,000-kin elevation show a
charged-particle -filled space up to 35oN and S geomagnetic latitude; the lower
level of the inner zone of intense radiation differs in the eastern and western hemi-

sphere; hence, the displacement of the magnetic dipole relative to the center of the
earth. Powerful electron streams, to which A. N. Nesmeyanov attributeg Lhe form-
ation of the auroras and which, upon collision with atoms and molecules in -he upper
atmosphere, may give off X-rays, increase in intensity from the equator to the
poles. Thus the peculiar deformation field along critical circles, earlier dis-
covered in the lithosphere, hvdrosphere, and troposphere, has now been traced by
satellites into the ionosphere: Satellite drag calculations indicate that the atmos-
pheric density, too, is subject to latitudinal (and diurnal.) changes. Magnetomet-
ric observations by Si"titnik-111 yield another interesting finding, namely, that the
EasLern-Siberian maonetic anomaly, which is located at the intersection of the two
critical circles of 61 Ib N latitude and 1050E longitude, constitutes a unique deep-
seated energy center of the earth, in which extremal stresses of geotectonic, geo-
magnetic, and other nature attain extremal values. Lastly, it is noted that an A
American artificial satellite with a near-polar orbit hits reportedly a higher periget:
when the perigee is above the south pole and a lower perigee when the perigee is
above the north pole, a fact which correlates well with the ob -trved maior gravita-
tional anomaly in Antarctica. There are no figures, tables, or referenceb.

load current, MWA voltage and primary motor speed are fed
to the MWA exciter windings. The first connection serves
to effect control for a considerable part of the self-
