ing produces inferior protective coatings. Phosphav.1,ug primers have
been developed, therefore, which are applied together with the paint.
They consist of a suspension of zinc tetraoxychromate in polyvinyl-
butyral and an acidic diltient which is an alcoholic solution of r,-ptos-
phoric acid. The primary alcohols reduce Cro'-~-to Cr3+which reazts
with the free phosphoric acid forming a complex chromophosphatte sall.,
The ratio H3PO4 : Cr03 should be hi&,er than 1.5 in order to obtain
good adhesion. The optimum value is 2, the pH value of the primer is

resistance. Lead and strontium chromes LRef 24, 25-7 are stable in
the acidic diluent for 18 months so that no mixing of the components
before application is needed. The Protective propertties of the primers
have been investigated by GIPI-4 Lf Ref PQ 7. Mey depend on the dis-
persion of the zinc chrome and the thickness of the applied layer.
The optimum thickness is 6 - 10.,K. The protective effect of a parkeriz-
ing layer is shown in Figures 1 - 5. In the USSR a two-component
primer VL-08 consisting of a rolled paste of aqueous zinc chrome with
polyvinylbutyral is being produced. It is mixed with an aoid diluent
at the ratio 4 : 1.

TEXT: The quality control in-serial paint production consists, in -
testing the characteristics provided for by the relevant standards mad ape-
cifications. In the process of development and introduction of paint mate-
rials new and little studied additional testing is necessary of physico-I
chemical, mechanical, paintingy protecting and decorative properties (for
instance, oil paints are tested for the color and shade, degree of rubbing,
covering power, drying times film hardnesa) its impact and bending strength-
water resistance, weather resistance, reuistance -to ];% NaC1 solution, ata-
bility in the artificial climate box). 'Primers are tested additional Ily ford
viscosity at 20QC by B3-1(VZ-I) and B3-4(VZ-4) dilution percentage, dry-
residue content, adhesion by the grid method, resistance of the film to

temperature changes, yielding to grinding and polishing, stability in mois-
ture chamber. Primers are not tested for covering power. For outside
enamels additional tests for spilling capacity covering power and stability
in the artificial climate box are recommended. For enamels used for coating
products intended for tropical service additional teats are recoiamended for
stability of coatings by the "tropic I and III' cycle -simulating conditions
of the moist tropical climate of coastal and industrial regions. '1'o e~valu-
ate the quality of new painting materials depending on their purpose, also
tests of their chemical and thermal stability, resistance to gasoline, sta-
bility in hot water, elec tro technical properties, solidification degree of
enamels etc, are carried out. COST numbers and specifications containing
descriptions of testing methods are given.

TITLE: Chrome Plating by Asymmetric Alternating Current

TEXT: The authors report on the effect of a change in the sense of
current at different ratios between density and duration of cathode- and
anode current upon chrome plating, Brass cathodes (0,02 dm2) were? chrom-e-
plated in a bath of 250 9/1 CrO 3 and 2.5 9/1 H 2 so 4' Pt or Pb served as
anodes. Electrolysis was conducted, for comparison, both with direct
current and with alternating current generated by a mechanical current
reverser; the amperage could be varied in the opposite b~ mean3
of a rheostat. The authors determined the current yield in chrom-ium, the
m~crohardness by a ITMT-3 (PMT-3) apparatus, as well as 1--rillisnce and
porosity of the chrome plating.. The data for d,c- aEreed with published

A superposition of sirxusoidal a.c. over d.c. had no effect at more than
500 cycles per second. At frequencies between 15 and 160 cycles and a
certain ratio between d.c. and a.c., an improvement in quality and a
slight increase in current yield were obtained, L. Ya. Bogorad, A. P~
Popkov, and A. T. Vagramyan are mentioned. There are 2 figures, 3 tables,

'ABSTRACT: A process for obtaining lead powder by cementation on cop-
per or its alloys in an aqueous solution of thiourea, lead nitrate,
and organic (tartaric or citric) acid has be en developed. Satisfac-
tory results were obtained with an aqueous solution of 5-8 g/dm3 lead
nitrate,-38-42 g/dm3 thiourea, 20-30 g/dM3 tartaric ac1d, and 1.8-
2.2 pH at 19-25C. Copper or brans submerged-for 1 hr were covered
with a solid layer of lead-1 uthick. With prolonged cementation Elbe lh~er,
became loose. The powder contained 90-96% lead and 0.2-2.6% sulfur.
The average particle size was 50-70 jj and the bulk density was
28 g/cm3. Changes in the concentration of citric acid f rom-5 to
30 - &/dm3 and lead nitrate f rom 1 to 5 g/dm3 had no ef fect on the emf.

Abstract Investigations of the citrua 6Tovee in Batumkiy Rayon
have demonstrated that the wide spread of E. granulatm
which was separated from plants of lemon, orange, tange-
rine and other citrus crops mainly inflicted with an in-
fectious drying out of the leaves and branches. The fun-
gus was most frequently encountered in the wood. Several
biological peculiarities of E. granulatum were studied
together with its interrelation to the fungus Deuteropho-
ma tracheiphila. Growing lemon., tangerine and orange
trees were artificially infected with the fungus.

ABSTRACT: In this short letter to the Editor, the author relates
an incident with an automatic radiocompass, which
registered the passing of a homing beam with a delay
of 5 to 8 seconds or even more. The delay was elimin-
ated by changing the frequency. It was found that
signals of another transmitter were being received on
the former frequency, which affected the indications
of the radio compass.
