well as on pulmonary infiltrates in Hodgkints disease. In
other cases the therapeutic effect was transient and romis-
sions ware brief. In addition to laicdn side offocts, thrcm-

TITLE: Reflection coefficients for spherical waves
PERIODICAL: Studia Geophysics, et Geodaetica, no. 2, 1961, 122-132
TEXT: The authors investigated the reflection coefficients of
spherical waves. The potential of the reflected harmonic wave on a plane
interface between two liquid media is formally expressed by the equa-tion
.ik R .
A ' . (2), where R is the distance from the apparent source and
R
A the modified reflection coefficient. The latter depends on the angle
of incidence, the parameters of both media and on the frequency, or wave-
length, of the incident wave. With increasing frequency the modified
reflection coefficient A asymptotically approaches the values of the re-
flection coefficient of plane waves A . The article deals with showing
the differences between A and A , par?icularly in the neighborhood of the
critical point. Since A and A 0Oare complex quantitiea, the following

are the amplitudes andlp* and * the phases of the reflection coefficients
A and A0 . In sections 2 anl?o, formulae are derived for A. Section 3
analyzes the situation before the critical point (sin i < n); section 4 in
the critical point (sin i=sin~* - n) and Section 5 beyond the critical
point (sin i> n). Around the critical point A* always grows with inoreas-
ing distance and at a certain distance beyond the critical point it has
its maximum. The amplitude of reflected spherical waves will not have its
maximum in the critical point, as would follow from geometric seismics,
but at a certain distance beyond that point. This distance is greater,
the nearer the refrantive index n is to one. It is shown that the smaller
the frequency, the farther the maximum is shifted from the critical point
and also that the position of the maximum practically does not depend on
the ratio of the densities. There are 2 tables, 4 figuees and I Soviet-
bloc reference.

PERIODICAL: Chemic4 pAmysl, 1960, Nr 4, pp 214-217
ABSTRACT: Corrosion under-coating compositio s are influenced by the
action of anions, especially of S04- and Cl-. The authors
suggest that it is possible to simulate the most important
properties of anti-corrosive pigments i.e. the ability to
form insoluble salts with anions. The proposed anti- 2+
corrosive paints comprise cation exchange resins with Ba
and Pbl+ in the cycle. These reduce and under optimum
conditions inhibit corrosion under the coatiug (Figs 1,
2 and 3). These paints were tested on a laboratory scale
and for one year under industrial conditions; it was
found that they gave more satisfactory protection to
steel even if the coating was applied on a fairly thin
layer of rust, They give protection which is almost as
effective as that of lead base anti-corrosive pigments,
and it is possible to formulate coatings with a shorter
drying time, which can be sprayed, They can be
card 1/2 applied in plants where the removal of rust is often

Abstract: The causes of illiteracy are discussed; in Czechoslovakia
army concentrates illiterates in two specialcourses, with
special treatment lasting for 2 months and given at -the start of
the nil-'tary service. In many cases the soldiers are discharEp d
from the army because of too low an intelAgence. 92 soldiers

in one of the courses were investigated; 75~* we , 46,L,,
came from families with psychopathic history,, 305f came from families
with 8-10 children. Drinking and smoking does not seem to be con-
nected with this problem. Out of 71 soldiers given the Wechsler-
Bellevue- IQ Test only 5 had an IQ of 81-90, the rest below 8&/,,.
Only 20% of those who attended thecourses learned to use letters.
