---Abstract- The nature ofthe associative structure of liquids and its
effect on the speed of sound is discussed. The velocity of
ctly upon the va -elastic
sound deDends dire lues of the quasi
coefficients of the bonds between the molecules of the liq-
uld. Associated liquids should have a much higher value of
the--speed'of sound than nonassociated liquids. The differ-
ence-in the degree of the effect of association on the speed
of sound or the adiabatic compressibility is Interpreted by
'taking Into consideration the nature of the associative stru-
-etures. Nine references. Graphs.

Abstract
In order totest'the generalized Rao law the authors measured the speed
of ultra sound in liquids the molecules of which form various types of
associative structures dueto the.hydrogen bond. The measurements were
carried out by means of a sound interferometer and a quartz plate with
natural-frequency of 1 me was used as the source of ultrasonic oscilla-
tions. . Results indicate that the Rao law, in its generalized form, is
applicable to all liquids. Associated liquids are subject to the Rao law,
in the same dearee as are nonassociated liquids. Seven references. Ta-
bles, graphs, diagram.

TEXT., Stressing the importance of this problem the author tries to
explain it by,the general formula P(r,-#Rp) = p (1), where r = detection dis-
tance.; Rp = the efficiency at e. 4etection probability, and P(r.,Rp) = the
probability.factor at Upicl. Figure 1 shows the probability of the detec-
tion efficiency of airborn objects; upper drawingi the degree of the prb-
bability of the detection efficiency and the surface corresponding to P%
of the detection probability; lower drawingt the detection probability at
a distance notless than r. At the computation of the detection range of
airborn object the problem arises of determining the value Rp based on the
measure N for detection distances r1, T2, ... ri, ---rn. This problem can
be solved by two methods, i.e. the graphical and the approximate-computaticn
method., The graphical determination method is based on a Gauss coordinate

ABSTRACT: Lnadeq!iate fwaction5ng of a water intake with a submerged rack gal-
lery, as far as silt-rernoval, is concerned, has often been a restilt of an in-cor-
rect position of these struct-aZes in the hydro -development layout. Usually,
silt -catching structures are placed at the end of the water-L-Ilet gallery; heace,
a stream with high silt content flows into the inlet structure. This could be
avoided by transferring the silt-catching systern upstream. In case of moun-
taia rivers, a sailt-interceptlag trench can be arraxaged along the water-L'Aake
gallery. X-zvestigations cc-nd-acted on a madel by the Institut Energ. AN KazSSR
(Power -Engfneering 1nstiltute, AS KazSSR) revealed that wash structures of

grit-catchers shoWd be designed as a system of holes running along the entire
length of the trench. This assures a continuous washing of the trench and an
adequately high concentration of grit in the washing discharge. It has been
found that the best system of trench washing, involving but a small water spill-
over, is a system of tubular washers employed along the whole length of the
trench. Such washers secure catching, and diverting downstream, 90-9576 of
the entire amount of grit reaching the hydro -development and having a size
less than the rack clearance; only 5-10% of the water discharge is spilled. On
the basis of laboratory investigations and theoretical- studies, methods for de-
signing a'silt -inter c eption trench with a rack, and a system for washing -it,
have been developed.

TITLE: On the transverse component of the momentum of neutral strange

PERIODICAL: Referativnyy zhurnal, Fizika, no. 6, 1962, 52 - 53, abstract 6B369
("Uch zap. Kabardino-Balkarsk. un-t", 1961, no. 13, 155 - 161)
The penetrating showers of cosmic radiation were investigated with
an apparatus consisting of a doubled Wilson chamber in the magnetic field, con-
trolled by a system of Geiger counters. The distribution of the transverse com-
ponents, Pt, of the momenta of 6P and,/P-particles generated in these showers
was examined. The apparatus permitted the measurement of momenta up to 2 -
2.5 Bev/c. In all, 13 Y-particles and 11 90-particles were processed. For
their greater part, these particles were in the range of Pt = 0.2 -.' o.4 Bev/c.
The mean value of Pt was 0.516 Bev/c, and within the experimental errors did not
depend on the particle type. L. Landsberg

ticleS accompanying extensive air showers . The showers were detected by three 0.01 N2
scintillation counters at the vertices of an isosceles right triangle having 10 a logs
The position and direction of the sh&vur axis were determined with the aid of six tray
of Geiger oftntierm located at the vertic6 anti at the centers of the 70 a sides of an
equilateral triangle. The penetrating particle detector was located 200 m.w.e. below
the center of the surface assembly and comprised six systems of two 0.3 na trays of 13.-
counters each. the two trays of each system being separated by 10 ow of load. In ordsi
to avoid errors due to delta electrons, triggering of two adjacent counters was always
ascribed to passage of a Single penetrating particle. Data on over 104 showers with -

distrIbution of penetrating particles was found to be In good agmemcnt with the formu,
la of S.Bennet and K.G tisen (Phyal Rev. , 124. S. 1961). Many more cuses were obser
in *hLch two or more to 5) penetrating particles were recorded In a single gho"r
than Can be accounts r by ramlon fluctuitions, consi4ering the low flux of penetra-
ting particles &M the small area 61- the -detector. It in concluded that correlated
groups of nuons occur in the column of an extensive air shower. an4 It to suggested
that these may be due to fluctuations In the elementary inte~iiiffoh of ulteabigh ener-
gy niecleons. The relation between the frequency of coincidences In the penctrating
particle dotcctor and the distance between the two counters Involved was In good agree,
mcnt with that found by.L.D.Gedevanishvili and I.I.Sakvar*lidxe (Soobsbohoniya AN

ABSTRACT: The article is a description of a device patented by the authors for
studying corrosion in metals under stress at high temperatures and pressures (Au-
ithorts Certificate,No. 154078, published in Byulteten' izobreteniy No. 8 1963).
Schematic diagrams are given of the instrum-nt as a whole and of its principal
parts. A general schematic of the device is shown in fig. I of the Enclosure. The"
unit consists of working chamber-1 with loading device 2, supercharger 3, intermedi-;,
