ABSTRACT: A general solution is given for the problem of the diffraction under-
gone by plane acoustic waves by an elastic circular cylinder. A wave
equation is written for a reflected wave and one for a refracted wave.
The solutions arrived at for these equations fulfill the requirement
that the displacements and stresses on the cylinder boundary surface
be equal; in addition, the reflected wave fulfills the condition of
radiation. The solutions appear in the form of series, with Bessel
functions for the refracted wave and Hankel functions for the reftec-
ted wave. For the case of an absolutely rigid cylinder (with the
normal velocity on the cylinder surface equal to zero) an asymptotic

ABSTRACTs Problems of unsteady motions of ground water caused by irrigation,
evaporation andplant transpiration, ara investigated here. A
layer of infinite depth (an area similar to the semi-space) and
a layer of finite depth limited from below by a plane horizontal
impermeable layer (an area similar to the horizontal plane-
parallel layer), are assumed. The problem is solved on the plane,
as well as in space. The solution is found according to the
method of the boundavy value problem from the theory of harmonic
functions on the basis of the linearized boundary condilion.
The latter was obtained on the assumption that the free ground-
wate:7 surface is similar to a horizontal plane. The solutions
obtained are generalizationc of the results from the papers by
L. A. Galin (Ref 1), N. N. Rochina (Refs 2 and 4), and
Card 112 V. K. Belyakova (Ref 3). There are 9 Soviet references.

Abstract In the yolk of a chicken egg, the lactic acid (1) content
increases 3-31 fold, but falls sharply during a second in-
cubation period. The concentration of pyruvic acid (11)
in the yolk increases continuously to approximately 9-fold.
The analogous behavior of I and II is also noted in egg
white. The content of I in an embryn decreases in the
second part of the incubation period until the fifteenth

day, and increase toward the end of development, but the
concentration of II decreases sharply toward the twentieth
day. Upon the incubation of the mixture of I and :[I with
the yolk (of various stages of the egg development) an in-
crease in the I content was noted in an unincubated egg
and also on the tenth and the twentieth day of the egg de-
velopment. On the fifth and the fifteenth day this pheno-
menon was weakly pronounced (approx. 10-15% increase).
A simultaneous drop in the content of II occured but not
equivalent to the increase of I. Upon the incubation of
I and TI with egg white, the increase in the I contant
was noted only on the fifth day of the egg incubation, and
the changes in the I and II content were of an irregular
nature on the tenth and fifteenth day. The bomogenate of
the embryo behaved in that respect similiarly to the egg
yolk. Direct determinations did not show a conversion of
I into II, a fact which has been also confirmed by

experiments refering to the effect of mono-bromoacatic
acid upon the mentioned conversion. Therefore tha pro-
blem of the fermentative or purely chemical nature of
the above mentioned phenomena remairs unsolved.
