In- experiments on a dog luminal inhibited the action of 1 (produced a frenatoral action); the greater the dose the greater its inhibition. It was im.- possible to differentiate between this action aad its specific paralyzing action. Small doses of chlo- ral, paraldehyde, and chloralose as a :7esult of their nonspeC'-fic action intensify the effectof 1 on the nervous system; large doses depress it (specific frenatoral effect). In some small ani- mals chloralose may induce spasms. Luminal inter- feres with the increase in the secretion of 111 by the myeloid substance of the suprernals induced by 1 and potassium ions. Chloral, paraldehyde, and chloralose have no effect on the secretion of 111. I _- TlTLE: Production of titanium dioxide from ilmenite concentrates by sodium sulphato melting SOURCE: Akademiya nauk SSSR. Institut metallurgii. Titan i yego splavy. No. 4. Moscow, 1960. Metallurgiya titana, 95-101 TEXT: In all experiments, ilmenite concentrate from the Irshinsk depo- sits, of 0.056 mm mesh size were used. The chemical composition of the concentrate was as follows: 51.46% TiO2, 33.78% Fe, 1.04% Al 203, 1.56% sio 21 0.86% MgO, 0.26% V 2051 0#42% MnO and traces of CaO. Wood charcoal with an ash content of approximately 2% and 0.4 mm mesh size was used as the reducing agent. The main reagent, Na 2so 4' is a natural product. The charges of ilmenite concentrate, Na 2 so4and wood charcoal were C ar d 1/4 S/598/60/000/004/010/020 Production of titanium oos 0217/D302 thoroughly mixed and transferred to porcelain or graphite crucibles. Charges weighing 200-300 grams were used for the experiments. The mix- tures were melted in a silite furnace. It was assumed that the melting was complete at the moment when gases ceased to be evolved from the melt . Bach crucible was then withdrawn from the furnace and the melt cast in a graphite mould. After cooling, the melt was ground and subjected to leaching with water and acido The residue was calcined and analyzed. for its iron and titanium dioxide content.. When ilmenite concentrates are melted with Na 2s0 41 the following reaction occurs: FeTiO. + Na 2SO4+ 2C = FeS + Na 2TiO3 + 2CO 2* The reaction intensity depends among other factors on the method of melting and the surface area of contact of the various phases. In order to find the conditions under which maximum extraction of iron in aqueous leaching is attained, the following factors were studied: Volume ratio between solid and liquid, time of stirring, temperature of leaching and degree of grinding of the melts. In all experiments, leaching was carried out at 25 0C for 15 minutes. The Card 2/4 5/598/60/000/004/010/020 Production of titanium 0217/0302 particle size of the melt was 1.6-0.85 mm. It was found that complete extraction of iron from the melt can be attained only when the sodium sulphate and carbon contents in the charge are sufficiently high. The optimum ratio between concentrate, sodium sulphate and wood charcoal in the charge (in parts-by-weight) is 1:2:0.6. At 1000-1050 0C, complete decomposition of the ilmenite concentrate 0occurs (up to 98 or 99%). No atelting of the charge occurs up to 900 C. At higher temperatures, intense melting occurs with much evolution of gas and a homogeneous fluid melt is formed. Extraction of iron sulphide into the solution depends on the time of leaching and the degree of grinding of the melts An increase in the time of leaching from 15 to 60-90 minutes decreases the amount of iron extracted into the solution owing to the transforma- tion of the sulphide from a soluble form into a gel. The optimum condi- tions for extracting iron sulphide in the aqueous solution (up to 80 or 85%) are as follows. ratio solid. liquid = 1;10, solution temperature - ITIO-800C, degree of comminution of the melt = 2-3 mm and timeQf leaching - 15-20 minuteR. Regardless of the pressure fluctuation before or after the system P and P2, the pressure drop on the control valve must remain con- stant, viz PI - P2 (see diagram). The old model regulators used a rubber membrane with a canvas reinforcement to with- stand high pressure; the stronger construction, however, in- volved a loss of sensitiveness. The Construction Bureau "Tsvetmetavtcmatika" has developed a nevi improved type of differential pressure regulator with a balanced (pressure relieved) membrane. Under all pressure changes of P2, upper find lower prossures exerted on the membrane are balanced; it .Lollows that the pressure drop on the membrane is determined by the pressure drop on the control point adjuster which Card 112 constitutes the difference between P, - P2 (Bee diagram 1). Differential Pressure Regulator With Balanced Membrane 117-58-5-12/24 Figure 2 shows a cross section through the improved control- point adjuster-setter with built-in bellows. Figure 3 is a cross section of the improved differential pressure regulator with balanced membrane. The new setter and regulator have been successfully tested and introduced into the Krasnourall- skiy medeplavillnyy zavod (Krasnoural'sk Copper Smelting Plant) in the automatic feeding system of the boiler uti- lizers.
