SiaciteAological Laboratory, Kaluga Oblast describes experiments which were
conducted to determine the effectiveness of local daily disinfections when
used as a means of localizing and eradicating foot-and-mouth disease. The
experiments were.based on the premise that the large "reservoirs" of the
virus of foot-and-mouth disease which are formed by virus excreted by
diseased animals are one of the main sources of infection and are respon-
sible for the rapid spread of the disease. It was felt that daily disinfec-
tions of these foci of infection would help in localiAna and even eradicat-
Ing the disease. A 2-percent. solution of sodium hydroxide was used as a
dinInfactIng agent. The results ofthe experiments, the author reports,
wer* highlY favorable, and-he sowests that doily,disinfections be added
to thi complex of measures considered necessary for the control of the
disease. The complex,.he says, should include: (1) strict administrative
measures, (2) -a.-atrictly enforced quarantines(3) vaccination an& (4) daily

tools were the following: V - 70, cK - 120, CP - 450, q71 - 300, X - 00,
* - I =. The haid-alloy bits were ground on green silicon carbide disks of
* granularity of 60 - 80, honing was effected with a boron carbide paste of Lf/
320 granularity. Figure 1 show's the test results of investigating the tool
wear during the turning of stainless IKhl8N9T grade steel with a cutting speed
of 1~0 m/min, a feed of 0.4 mWrev and a cutting depth of 3 mm. Figure 2 shows
the tool durability as a function of the cutting speed during the turning of
1.Kh18NqrT grade steel. The wear of the rear surface hr - 1 mm was taken as the

criterion of wear. Analogous functions were obtained for the turning of
'the lXh13 grade steel and the heat-resisting E1654 alloy. Experimental
investigations of the cutting properties of hard-alloy bits under laboratory
and manufacturing conditions showed that the hard-alloy grades VK8, VK6,
T5K10 and T15K6 possess a different character and intensity of wear. The
least durable hard alloys were the grades VK6 and T15K6, whose wear was main-
ly characterized by a breaking off and chipping of the cutting edge. In-
vestigations carried out under manufacturing conditions with the machining of
the stainless steel grades IKUMT and lKhl3 and the heat-resisting E1654
alloy confirmed the superiority of the hard-alloy grades VFK8 and T5K10. The
results of these tests are cited by the author in a table. The durability
of tools fitted with VK8 and T5K10 grade hard-alloys exceeds that of tools
of high-speed R18 grade steel by 10 - 15 times.

ABSTRACT: A general review of a 40-year period of progress made 1)y the UOV18% UnlOn 2.11
construction of marine power plants is presented. The prewar development including some
obsolete steam and diesel power plants is retrospectively m=veyed. Shipbuilding was
completely discontinued during the World War. A now development started in 1950 to
produce many series of new ships and marine power plants. Two-shaft plants with 800 hpo
300 rpm diesel engines of 8DR-50/50 type are installed on tankers "Oleg Koshe"Y" and
"Inzhener Pustoplikin" and on freighters of the "Inthener Belov" class. Diesel plants
with 2000 hp, 250 rpm engines of MR-43/61 type are in operation on fish trawlers of the
11&yakovskiy" clans, passenger ships of "Kirkisstan" classo tankers of "Kasbek" clans and
cannery-shipo of the "Andrey Zakharov" class. Diesel d-c electric plants with a D50,
1000-hp engine are used for propulsion of the tanker "General Azi Aslanov" and fish ships
of the "Tavriyam =qsel d-c electric plants with a D10% 1800-hp engine are
employed for freittters of "DWrogea" clasep refrigerator ships of "Sevastopol'" and

11yantanlyy" classt icebreaker-freighters of "Amguema" class, railway ferries of the
"BovetWdy Azerbaydzhan" class and harbor icebreakers of the "Dobrynya Nikitich" class.
Low-speed one-shaft diesel plants are mentioned for freighters IlSukhona" (5DKO 50/110
type, 2900 hp, 170 rpm)t "Vytegralea" (qDKM 50/110 type, 5200 hP, 170 rPm) and OIBezhitsO
(7DUN 74/160 type, 8750 hp, 115 rpm). Steam-turbine plants with steam rated at 45 atm
and 470 0 are used for freighters of "Leninakiy Komsomol" class (TS-1 type, 23000 hp with
a KVG-25 boil and for tankers of "Pragall and "Sofiya" class (TSI; type, 19000 hp with
a KVG-34 boil:rr~. The icebreaker 'Unin" with nuclear power plantf/kone 20000 hp shaft
and two of 3.1000 hP ea~Tis mentioned. In 1964, the tests of a 130OD-hp gas turbine
plant of GTU-20 type were completed for freighter "Parithakaya Xomm=".' Some ships
equipped with power plants of foreign origin are also mentioned, The progress in speed
between 1951 and 1959 was from 13 to 19 knots. The Bryanak Machine-Building-Plant
