~ABSTRACT: In this paper the authors investigate the ratio T :T and the iqdex of
mean a
the friction forces CP - T p (T Vp are the specific forces of friction
mean mean mean mean
An a normal pressure averaged on the contact surface; T is the consistency limit in
shear) which most completely characterize the forces of external friction during
plastic deformation in the cold sagging of copper, zinc, and Armco iron. The de-
pendences of friction and pressure and the various metals are presented in graphs.
The experimental data show: 1) the forces of friction essentially depend on the
focus form of the deformation at a given state of the working surface, 2) the ratios
between the triction forces and nor al pressure depend on the temperature-velocity
con4ition of deformation, mechanical properties of the metal or alloy and especially

on the change of these properties during deformation, 3) mechanical properties of
.the metal or alloy on the contact surface can differ considerably from those in the,
'basic volume of the body which is connected with the hardening process and tempera-i
:ture changes. Origo art, has: 2 figures and 1 table.

Contact pressure during hot upsetting of heat resistant steels and alloys
SOURCE. IVUZ. Chernaya metallurgiya, no. 4, 1966, 92-98 13
TOPIC TAGS: heat resistant steel, heat resistant alloy, hot upsetting, metal deforma-
tion, pressure distribution, surface pressure, friction, temperature dependence
ABSTRACT: Experimental methods and analysis of data are based on an earlier work (Pok-1
Isevatkin, et al, Izvestiya vyeshikh uchebnykh zavedeniy. Chernaya metallurgiya, 1964
Po. 6). The parameters *=T /T and n=p /a are given as functions of the ratio of sur-
av a av 13 !
ce contact diameters D to sample heights 11 at 950, 1050 and .11500C. Upsetting was

!done on a friction press and a drop hammer. Values for * and n were calculated by
iaveragiing the tangential T and normal pressures p over the contact surface, while

iThe relative compression was 20-30% in the friction press and 15-20% in the drop ham-
~mer. Data for heat resisting steels and alloys corresponded to those obtained in the
reference cited above for ordinary carbon and alloy steels. A theoretical analysis of

contact pressure during plastic deformation is given. During plastic defornation
der variable surface friction, the tangential contact pressure T depended on the nor-
mal pressure p and on the contact displacement u. A qualitative graph is shown of -r
as a function of u at constant p for both strain hardening and nonstrain hardening
materials. The oniet uf external friction forces wat; cauued by deformation and other,
mechanical processes. The increase of contact slipping obeyed the law.of minimum ex-
ternal and internal work. For internal displacement under constant relative deforma-'
tion, samples of different thickness (B) to height (H) ratios but constant widths werle
compared. For complete surface contact, the displacement deformation depended on H,
given a constant value of B, or on B/H--given a constant deformation. The magnitude
and distribution of surface friction depended on the meci-7nical properties of the mate-
rials and above all on the thin precontact layer. For hot deformation, the change of
temperature fields on the contact surface was extremely important. Under upsetting,
the increase in Tav /TSwith DIH was retarded, while P av /asrose sharply with increase
in DIH. This was caused by the character of strengthening of the precontact and in-
ner layers during deformation and of the temperature changes on the contact. The
changes in TavIPCIV , indicating the force of contact friction""'were given as functions
of DIH at 950, 1050 and 11500C. In all cases, T av /P av had a maximum at about DIH=5.
This was explained by changes in kinematic conditions and the nonlinear dependence of
friction on pressure. Orig. art. has: 6 figures, 2 formulas.

mun'ist regime from a geographical point of view. The new
geo;3raphy of Russia, built up on socialist principles, gives
a clear picture of the changes since the revolution. In
1913, 2f3 million people lived in towns, in 1956 their number
is 87 million. While the number of towns was 709 in 1926,
the total amounts to 1,569 thirty years later. The striking
fact is that the USSR has become an industrial country with-
in 40 years, with 43,4% of' the population residing in towns.
In czarist Russia administrative points of view decided over
the location of a community, in the USS R economic considera-
tions are given preference. All newly founded towns and
villages are located in regions abounding in coal or oil or
along new railroads or important rivers. Also, decisive for
the modern development are the high-tension power transmission
lines which enable the establishment of giant industries,
extensive pipe lines, new railroads and highways. Other geo-
Card.1/2 graphical changes are caused by numerous canals built to

conneet the main water reservoirs in the European USSR, and
the rivers made navigable or altered by newly erected dams
and electric power stations. Vast areas have been opened to
agriculture such as the 36 million hectares of virgin soil
taken under cultivation during the past 3 years. Zones,
especially suited for pastures, for growing wheat, cotton,
corn, tea, sugar beets etc. have also determined the new look
of the country Is geography. Since all projects realized by
the Party aim at full utilization of all economic resourcest
thereby changing the geographical position entirely. Friend-
ly relations have been established with bordering countries
and sound economic and cultural contacts with overseas coun-
tries, Canada and the USA, would be welcome.
