the pi-~oto~;raphic layer was measured in an integrating sphere proposed by
Ye.q'-.~'irillov :ind M.L.Broun (Fig.l). On the basis of the data obtained the
authors plotted a number of curves for the a.-:.monia-containing as well as the
a~-_monia-free emulsions. The curves exhibiting the dependence of the spec-
tral sensitivity SA of the layers (D=0.2+D ) on A (400-500 m~t) (Fig." and

holds for thin layers. Photographa of the microsections show with reduced
wavelength a certain diminution of effective layer thicVmess, w-ich, 'ouever,

shape of the curve of spectral ser.3itivity is determined by other factors
aDart from spectral light absorption in the layer, ammonia and a.-.monia-free
ei-Jiulsions were prepared with or wi~;hout iodine ionse These emulcions were
,--iven different times of second ripening. The obtained la.,,ers were SDectro-
,-~ensitometrically tested and tlieir absorption spectrum deter.-iined. Figure
11 shows a family of curves of spectral sensitivity for one of t~-ese series.
lt can be seen that the shape of the curves changes depending on the time
of second ripening. "he authors' observation that for ripened layers in-
creasing sensitivity cannot be detormined by a change in the absorption
spectrum vas found to be in agreement with the data obtained by B.G.Varshaver,

The possibility of measuring the permittivity e of very small
samples, such that the maximum dimension of the sample 2a is
much less than the wavelength ), , is of considerable practical
interest. For a sample having the form of an ellipsoid of
revolution situated in an electric field Eo which is parallel

quality factors of the resonator with and without the sample
respectively lhe parameter R can be determined graphically
(Fig, 1). It is shown by analyzing the measurement conditions
that the main error in measuring c' is due to the deviation
of the sample from its ellipsoidal form On the other hand
the error in the measurement of c is primarily due to the
error in determining the quality factor of the resonator without
load, The errors in measuring c, were investigated experi-
mentally with parallelopiped samples of identical weight, it
was found that for the cylindrical samples the measurement error
Of E did not exceed 10%_ On the other hand, when compared
with the waveguide method of measurement, the above small-sample
method resulted in a discrepancy of not more than 45. It is
therefore concluded that the small-sample method can be used
successfully for the measurement of c' , the errors of measure-
ment are comparable with those of the waveguide method
rurther, the small-sample method has the advantage that very
small samples can be employed and that interpretation of the
results is not more complex than that in the other methods

decrease of the fast components of the relaxation curves was ;nder, erdent of
temperature which is indicative of cross relaxation. A change in the ges

no longer observed at a concentration of 0.1%. The time of spin-lattice
relaxation is inversely proportional to the power 2 + 0.5 of the overall ges
and ces concentration. Cerium impurities (up to 0.27,T) had a uniform effect
on all the linos of the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum if the
difference between the resonant frequencies of the Gd and Ce lines did not
exceed 300-400 Mcps. The rcsults obtained have not confirmed the hypothesis
of "exchange pockets" (Ref. 1, see below) explaining spin-lattice relaxation
at low temperatures. Conclusions: in spite of their strcngly different
magnetic and relaxation properties, Gd3+ and Ce3+ ions have tnu same effect
on thenAsimtionxate. The ratio of the relaxation timeo of transitions
-7. -
9 m + 1 and m -t (m-1) is on1j slightly influenced by chanL7es in
temperature which lead to a redistribution of the paramagnetic ions. This
behavior is consistent with the assumption of lattice defects due to impuri-
t~-es taking a great part in relaxation. This assumption was treated theo-
retically by B. I. Kochelayev (DAIN SSSR, .1~1, -1053, 1960). TLere crp 2

ABSTRACT: To detemine the- true temperature de ndence of the spin-lattice relaxa-
tApAAAMe In MWI and the d.ependence on the concentration, the measurements were made
in a zero external magnetic field, where the, spin system ban only two levels. The
relwmtion times in crystals with chromiurn concentration O.o4, o.o44, 0.125, oa6,
and 0.35% were measured in the tem~j~iFaiiW6 Interval 1.5--40K at the Initial split.-
ting frequency (11.480 14c) by a pulse-d method. The temperature dependence (Fig. 1)
exhibits three regions with different variations: Vj.3L - TIL, T2, and T7. A similar
result was observed In magtietic fields. The boundary between the linear and quadrat-
Ic regions shifts with the concentration. No region with a quadratic variation was
observed in the crystals with lowest concentration. Since the change In the temper-
ature dependence indicates a change In the relaxation mechanism, the concentration

ABSTRACT: A traveling wave spectroscope with high frequency modulation of the magnetic
field is described. The spectroscope was used to measure the spin-lattice relaxation
tire at heliwa temperatures by the method of pulse saturation in the frequency range
fmm 7500 to 12,000 Me. The modulation frequency of the magne-,ic field was 230 kc
lwhile the xiplification of the signal and the synchronous detection was carried out on
the second harmonic (460 kc) within -the band of 15 kc. The Karp scheme was -ased for,
the delay system. The use of high frequency modulation and of the delay systern irprov-
es the accuracy and reliability of relaxation time measurements and exzends the posss.~_
bilities, of the experiment. It becrAaes possih~le to investigate the spin system at sev-
eral fT-equencies simultaneously. Orig. art. has: I figure.

ABSTRACT: The automation laboratory of the TsYTI has worked out an,i
tested a trial mode'. of phosphates concentration reF,,-~Iator
for boiler water. The regulator is designed to mairta:.n
a constant concentration of 1'0 ions in the water, thus
preventing the formation of slilg deposits on the heating
surfaces of the boiler. The regulator's sensitive element
is an automatic colorimeter which tests the actual phos-
phates concentration in the boiler water sample by a change
in the optical density of the phosphomolybdic group. A
constant Bample is supplied from the boiler water, and the
