NIE-4: "Soviet Course of Action with Respect to Germany," published 1 February. 2. NIE-8: "Greece's Position in the World Balance of Power," canceled on recommendation of the National Estimates Board in favor of NIE-26. 4. NIE-6: "Iran's Position in the East-West Conf'lict." The contribute ns-of IAC agencies (State and Army) were received by 30 January. A draft is in preparation in the Office of National Estimates. 5. NIE-9: "Turkey's Position in the World Balance of Power." A draft estimate was reviewed by the National Estimates Board on 31 January. After minor revisions have been made, it will be sent to the IAC agencies for comment, probably on 2 February. 6. NIE-13: "Prospects for the Creation of an Adequate Western European Defense." General Megee is handling the problem of obtaining operational information for inclusion in this paper. A draft prepared without the benefit of the Joint Staff contribution is now under review in the Office of National Estimates. It is proposed to proceed with this and check draft against the Joint Staff contribution when it has been received. 7. NIE-19: "Possibility of Japanese Alignment with the United States and Its Allies:" Terms of reference were approved by the IAC representatives on 3 January. Contributions from the agencies were received by 12 January. National Estimates Board to consider a draft about 3 February. NIE-20: "Consequences in Mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaya, Burma of communist control of Indochina." IAC representatives met on 17 January and agreed on terms of reference. Contributions were due by 31 January. On 31 January, Army (who is coordinating the contributions of the defense agencies), requested and was granted an extension until 7 February. ? 0 SECRET IAC-PR-7 31 January 1951 9. NIE-22: "Vulnerability of the Soviet Bloc to Economic Warfare." IAC representatives and ECA met on 9 January to discuss terms of reference. State draft received 17 January. The National Estimates Board discussed a draft of the paper on 23 January. State draft Summary Conclusions were received on 25 January. A revised draft was circulated on 29 January for Board consideration. Board met on 31 January. After further revisions draft is to go to IAC agencies without further reference to Board. Office of aaiional Estimates drafting terms of reference. 11. NIE-24: "German Attitude towards Remilitarization." National Estimates Board approved terms of reference on 26 January. These were sent to the IAC agencies on the 27th, for consideration at a meeting scheduled for 3:00 Thursday, 1 February. 12. NIE-25: "Soviet Capabilities and Intentions." Discussed by the National Estimates Board on 24, 25, and 29 January. A redraft will be available for the consideration of the Board about 1 February. 13. NIE-26: "Key Problems in the Near and Middle East Affecting US Security Interests." The National Estimates Board approved terms of reference on 25 January. These were distributed to the IAC agencies on the 26th, for consideration at a meeting scheduled for 10:00 Friday, 2 February. 14. NIE-27: "Chinese Communist Capabilities and Intentions with Respect to Ta an." Pursuant to the action of the IAC at its meeting on 25 January, the Office of National Estimates is now drafting terms of reference. 15. NIE-28: "Likely Soviet Tactics in a Prospective CFM'." Dr. Langer agreed that in view of nature and urgency of project the Department of State (OIR) would submit a draft to the Office of National Estimates. This draft should be received about 2 February. This estimate was undertaken as a matter o urgency at the request of the Department of State. Dr. Langer approved the terms of reference on 30 January. A meeting of IAC representatives is scheduled for 10:00 Thursday, 1 February. ?
