It was then billeted in a former German _ hospital and school near STALIN Allee in the Soviet Sector of BERLIN (see End l C). - the 68th was selected as the bat regiment in the FOURTH Gds Kees Army and that it would remain indefinitely in BERLIN as a wahow regiment' to brotect the German Democratic Republic. no return to its former station in BAD FREIENWAIDE was contemplated. b. =given differed from OB on band in the following respects: Previous OB infermation-listed Col II/CHALOV as CO, 6th Gds Nees Div. About half a kilometer from the installation was the 68th Gds Med Tk Regt ammo depot. it was 150 X 100 meters in size, fenced in by a barbed-wire fence 23 motors high, and contained an unknown number of wooden ammo buildings, size and contents of Which were unknown. IMO 1. EM billets: occupied up to 15 Jul 53 by 68th Gds Mad Tk:Regt as follows: Basement - clothing supply; let floor - QM platoon, Band, medical detachment, dim, pensary, capacity about 50 EN; 2d floor - Gds SKG Ba, about 200 EN, 3d floor lot Tk Ba, about 100 EK. Estimated actual total occupancy, 350 M. Each floor had about 18 rooms, some for NO0o, two to three in a room, some as storage for weapons, rucksack*, and some for U. About 16 EN were in a room, 6 x 6 m, in double decker wooden bunks. There was a 150-em aiele in the center, -and about 50 to 60 cm between bunko. 2. EN billets: occupied up to 15 Jul 53 by the regiment as follows: lot floor - regimental headquarters and Gat SP En, about 100 EN; 2d floor officers' billets, capacity unknown! 3d floor - 2d Tk Ba and Ode ALL MG Co, about 150 EK. 3. Messhall for 68th Gdo Ned Tk Regt up to 15 Jul 53. A 2-story building, it had a capacity of 800-1000 men. lot floor - officer and EN meoshalls, PI; 2d floor - club, library, switchboard; Basement - food and fodder storage. 4. 2K-billets: occupied by 19th Gdo Motorcycle and Becton Ba, capacity unknown* 5. They were made of brick. LEGEND 1* Officer billets: 2-stedy bldg %in which about 15 officers lived, one to three in a room. EM b2. arracks: barracks: 2-story bldg that housed about 250 men on each floor. Billeted there were the let and 2d Pk Bus, Ods8MG Bft, and Gds SP Bn. IL company of about 50 Elf occupied a room, 10 x 6 m and slept in double-decker beds. Interval between bunks was about 60 to 80 ea, with an aisle about two-meters wide running in the center. Barracks windows were barred. the guardhouse and stockade were in the basement of this building. 3. Control point, manned by a sentry for 24 hours. 4. PI and food storage: 1-story bldg, guarded at night by a sentry. 5. Railroad spur ending at compound. 6. Outdoor gymnasium (horses, rings, bars, obstacle course). 7. Football stadium. 8. Wooden fence, zabout Zi-meters high. 9. Barbed wire fence, about a-meters high. 10# Drivers School, garages, and ordnance: 1-story bldg containing classrooms with mockups for instruction on brakes, fuel system, engine and gears. Garage bad one EL-64 armored scout car and two armored 6 x 6 personnel carriers. Ordnance contained lathes and vises for small arms maintenance and repair. 11* EN Club: 1-story bldg, contained dayroom and movie. Construction was still going on to enlarge the club at time of sourcele defection. 12. Orchard, fenced off by barbed wire fence. 13* Garages: eight 1-story bldgs. Garages only had a paved floor and side walls; they were open from the front and had a roof of canvas. The buildings contained an um- known number of unidentified trucks, IA. MOB, about 20 tO 22 SP guns, and about 44 2-3015 tanks. The area was guarded continually by two walking sentries and one sentry in a 15-meter high tower (#14). 14# Wooden tower: 15-meter high, manned 24 hours daily by a sentry. POL storage: outdoor area having a paved floor and ? containing an unknown number of iron barrels of approx 150-liter capacity, filled with gas and or Diesel oil. Area was always guarded by a sentry. 17. Officer billets: 2-story bldg, capacity unknown. 18. Vehicle and tank repair shop: 1-story bldg, contained lathes, screw cutting machinery and various repair machinery. 19. Repair shop: 1-story _bldg, contained a battery charger and various repair machinery. 20. Garage: had a canvas roof, brick walls and paved floor* It contained two T-34/85 tanks, used for training pur- poses. 21. Clothing supply: 1-story bldg, guarded continuously by a sentry. 22. Stage for shows. Wooden platform about 50 x 30 n4 23. EN billets, 2-story bldg - downstairs were one German barber, several Soviet tailors and Soviet shoemakers; upstairs, billets for QM platoon. 24. Officer's club: 2-story bldg? housed the library and had assembly rooms. Switchboard was on the first floor* , 25. Dispensary: 2-story bldg, had unknawn number of beds. Source knew no further details. 26. EK billets: 2-story bldg, capacity unknown. It housed men of the regimental band and of the Gds ALL KO Co. 27. EN billets: 2-story bldg, capacity unknown. It housed men of the Tk Tech Supply Co and Gds Hqs Co* 28* FIK bathhouse: 1-story bldg, about 15 x 15 m held about 50 men. 29. Messhall: 2-story bldg. First floor for EN, capacity 350. Regiment of about 700 ate in two sittings. Second floor for officers* Furnace room for central heating of compound. It had a brick chimney about 60-meters high and was right at the edge outside of the compound. German firemen ser- viced the furnace.
