1. ` The Sokolov Chemical Works (N 5./P 58) are located to the west of the town of Sokolov
and north of the main road between Sokolov and Karlovy Vary. The buildings of the
25X1 plant are of brick and are about 20 meters high. The plant occupies an area of four
hectares and is surrounded by a wooden fence, No special. security precautions are
taken in the Sokolov Chemical U rks. It is guarded by a works militia of unknown
etrengthu
The plant produces 130 tons of carbide as a daily average. There are six furnaces in
the carbide department; the daily output of the four larger furnaces is 2,9760 kg# each,
file the two smaller furnaces produce 1,350 'kg. each per day. 'The carbide produced is
sorted in the sorting shed and that of good quality is immediately loaded into railroad
os:rs 'and ' sent off to an unknown destination. Carbide of lower quality in moved into
the nitrate fertilizers departanent.
All the machinery of the plant is: old. The plant was not damaged during.World War II.
A railroad spur from the maim station at Sokolov leads to the' plant.
Technical personnel in the plant is experienced; the quality of products in general is'
good and there are no rejects.
Power is supplied by the plentgs own thereto-electric power plant. Coal. for the power
'plant is hauled in by cable cars.
There are about 1,800 employees of the plant, 200 of whom area women, Wages average
from 1,000 to 59000 Kos. per month, but in the carbide department, where irk is on a
piecework basis, wages average 8,000 Kea. per month. Morale is rather low because of
the'-sew wages paid. The employees of the plant are never sent out on work brigades,
but work brigades of 15 people occasionally come to the plant. to help out. No political
education is given to the employees.
