16. Talked with Senator Stuart Symington
on the proposed brief letter to Senator Fulbright on the Carver article.
Senator Symington stated that he did not believe this was sufficient particularly
in view of the length of time. Taking certain of his suggestions, a new letter
was prepared which was signed by the Director and dispatched.
17. Met with Mr. Robert Michaels, House
Appropriations Committee staff, and briefed him in some detail for the
Chairman on the forthcoming article

is. Met with Senator Gale McGee (D., Wyo.)
concerning his request to the Saigon Station during his visit for information
on the rural construction cadre in South Vietnam. Senator McGee advised
that he is drafting an address to be presented on the floor of the Senate
and needs all the information that can be released and provided at this time.
He noted in scanning the paper of February 1966 (which was originally
prepared for the Vice President) and which was forwarded for the Senator,
that much of the inforna tion. has become dated, particularly after the CBS
television presentation last week. He was most cordial and indicated that he
would appreciate as much information as could be provided by the Director
for his use. I have a tentative appointment to meet with the Senator tomorrow
afternoon to furnish the information FE Division has been advised of the
foregoing.
19. Met with Mr. W. E. Cresswell,
Administrative Assistant to Senator John Stennis, and provided the materials
concerning the Carver Forei?n Affairs articles requested by the Senator
in his meeting with the Director yesterday.
20, Robert Michaels, House Appropriations
Committee staff, requested information concerning the newspaper reports
of additional freedom or autonomy being granted the Kurds by the chief of
state of Iraq. DD/I has been notified.
