Dat Thit Artillery Barracks Area was newly identified on photography of The installation is in the northern panhandle area of North Vietnam. The barracks area can probably house a regiment-sized unit. Twenty-two field artillery pieces were observed, and a limited number of additional artillery pieces probably could be stored in small equipment sheds. The barracks area is comprised of small company-sized barracks and support areas that are situated separately throughout the installation. 2. This report contains a description of the installation by component areas, an overall photograph of the installation, and three photographs of individual artillery barracks and storage areas. INTRODUCTION 25X1 D 25X1 D 3. Dat Thit Artillery Barracks Area as newly identified on GIANT SCALE photography of The installation is 36 nautical miles (nm) north of Vinh, North Vietnam, near the village of Dat Thit at 19-154 105-35U. It covers a 2- by 1-nautical mile area and consists of 17 separate component areas. 4. The component areas include seven company-sized artillery barracks and storage areas and ten barracks and support areas. The ten barracks and support areas include six barracks areas, one barracks and administration area, one probable housing area, one barracks and vehicle storage/maintenance area, and an ammunition storage area. The installation probably can house a North Vietnamese regiment-sized unit. Two field artillery battalions were also identified on 25X1 D photography of Installations of this size-built specifically to house or train large military units--were uncommon during the period of aerial bombing over North Vietnam. 5. Each of the seven company-sized artillery barracks and storage areas is located in a separate part of the installation. Each area contains similar types of buildings, normally including five-to-six barracks, several administration or support buildings, one possible messhall, and two vehicle/equipment storage sheds (Figure 1). In five of the seven company-sized areas, a battery of four field guns was parked on hardstands adjacent to the barracks area. Two field artillery pieces were identified at another company area. At three of these artillery barracks a single revetted artillery training position was observed. 6. Buildings in the installation are of semipermanent construction; they are built of wood and thatch, similar to indigenous dwellings in the adjacent areas. The pattern of construction and building layout, however, is more uniform and planned than in civilian communities. BASIC DESCRIPTION Component Areas 7. Each of the 17 component areas of the barracks area is described below. Area A: Artillery Barracks and Storage Area 8.
