SUBJECT: Hal Ford's, `Senate Select Committee on Intelligence
&Va staff, Request on our Reporting on China
-
The other day I took Hal Ford in my car on the trip to NPIC
and used the opportunity to talk with him about the request he had
made to n the so-called str -n st and weaknesses
of our reporting on _lina. (See note attached. )
I told Ford that we had some difficulty with the idea of our preparing
a critique on our reporting on China. He redefined his request and
said that what he really wanted was to get a better understanding of
the problems involved in reporting on China; what sources do we have
that we feel are relatively reliable and what difficulties are we having
in acquiring information on China. I believe this puts the request in
a slightly different perspective and makes it a more l.e<
one. I have discussed my conversation with Ford with
and would recommend that his people go ahead with a draft paper
which we and you could review before sending it to Ford.
