Athens is therefore taking an assertive Zine in an effort to m ke sure that the West does not neglect Greek interests. In an unexpected move late last week, the Greeks told Ambassador McCloskey that they were suspending the nearly completed negotiations for a new agreement on Voice of America activities in Greece. The VOA stations-- which transmit to the Balkans, the Ukraine, and the Mid- dle East--will be allowed to continue operating indefi- nitely under the existing agreement. Greek officials told the Ambassador that resumption of the talks will be contingent primarily on the outcome of the negotia- tions over the US-Greek Defense Cooperation Agreement and ultimately on the reintegration of Greece into NATO's military wing. F7 I 25X1 Greece acknowledges the need for increased Western financial and military aid to Turkey, but is concerned that Turkey may receive preferential treatment. The Greeks will calibrate their pressure very care- fully. Their recent decision to allow a port call at Piraeus by the USS Eisenhower, for example, was almost certainly designed to take some of the sting out of the suspension of VOA talks. 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T00975A031200200002-1 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO31200200002-1 Next 15 Page(s) In Document Exempt Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO31200200002-1 Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T00975A031200200002-1 OVERNIGHT REPORTS (The items in the Overnight Reports section have not been coordinated within the intelligence community. They are prepared overnight by the office of Current Operations with analyst comment where possible from the production offices of NFAC.) Pakistan The US Embassy reports that, during an interview with US News and World Report, President Zia stated that "unfortunately, Western-style democracy is not suited to the Pakistani psyche." Zia also said that he would like to introduce "a few amendments" to the constitution, try again to convince politicians to hold non-party local elections prior to national elections this fall, and attempt to create a "permanent role for the military" in governing Pakistan. 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T009754031200200002-1 Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T00975A031200200002-1 25X1 Turkey-Cyprus The US Embassy in Nicosia reports that Turkish Am- bassador Onhon told Ambassador Stone yesterday that the Turkish side remained interested in a negotiated state- ment on Cyprus and that Ankara had urged Turkish Cypriot leader Denktash to be flexible and forthcoming. The Turkish side, Onhon said, is ready to send Turkish Cypriot "Foreign Minister" Atakol to the UN for talks whenever convenient to Secretary General Waldheim. Ac- cording to Ambassader Stone, the current UN efforts have come to the end of the road with no effective results, and any further mediation to be acceptable to the C riots must be under Waldheim's aegis. 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79TOO975AO312(10200002-1 25X1 Top Secret Top Secret Approved Faq Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO31200200002-1
