Soviet Construction and Industrial
Production Indices
1. This memorandum with attached tables is in
response to a telephone request of 29 November 1973
for indices of Soviet industrial and construction
,activity for the period 1949-72.
2. Table A provides indices derived from Soviet
data sources for all industry, Group A industry, and
Group B industry. Group A industry corresponds roughly
to heavy industry and is defined as industry which
produces the means of production. Group B industry
represents primarily the consumer goods sector.
3. The Soviets do not publish input oriented index
series for construction activity. Therefore, a final
output index series is provided in Table B based on
Soviet reports of the amount of construction plus
installation in 1969 Soviet prices. The results for the
period 1961-72 are extracted directly from the Soviet
data. The results for earlier years are more tenuous
because of tle need to convert the reported amounts to
1969 prices.
4. A r;T_A derived construction materials index is
also included to provide some feel for the relationship
between input and output indices. This series is fairly
crude and is based only on domestic production instead
of consumption of construction materials.
