This report on the Hungdogi-dong Port Complex is one of a continuing
series by NPIC on North Korean ports and naval installations. The
Hungdogi-dong (Hungnam) port facilities serve the industrial complexes of
Hungnam and Hamhung. Capab:!_e of accommodating large oceangoing cargo
vessels, Hungdogi-dong appears to be second only to Chongjin in cargo
handling capacity on the east coast of North Korea. No identifiable naval
installation can be identified in the Hungdogi-dong Port Complex. A small
port facility, Chakto-dong, is located SE of Hungnam.

On the east coast of North Korea facing Hamhung-jean and the Sea of
Japan.
This installation, also known as the Hungnam port facilities, is a deep
water seaport capable of berthing large ocean-going cargo vessels. Adequate
covered storage, craneage and hinterland transportation make it one of the
principal North Korean seaports.
Facilities include a large road- and rail-served mole with 3 transit
sheds, 2 quays, and a small crane-served probable bulk cargo loading area.
The harbor is protected by a breakwater.
A 10-fathom curve runs across the entrance to Hathhung-Man. General
depths in the middle of the bay are 6 to 8 fathoms.
