China: International Trade,
First and Second Quarter, 1982
The trade statistics in this publication are derived from computerized series
of partner country data, which are continuously updated. The methodolo-
gies for these programs are described in appendix A of CIA, ER CIT 79-
1001, China: International Trade Quarterly Review, Firs[ Quarter, 1979
and in the preface to CIA, EA 82-10015, China: International Trade,
Annual Statistical Supplement, February 1982. The most recent quarterly
estimates are made with about 75 percent of the trade having been
reported. Based on analysis of the variance in past trade shares, we expect
that when all countries have reported, the total trade figures will differ
from our estimates for the current quarter by less than 2 percent for
exports and less than 4 percent for imports. Estimates for earlier quarters,
for which we have much more complete trade partner data, are expected to
change only marginally.
Unless otherwise noted, Chinese exports, imports, and trade balances are
valued free-on-board (f.o.b.) at the port of origin. For balance-of-payments
purposes, this procedure is preferable to valuing imports on a cost-
insurance-freight (c.i.f.) basis. Because a large share of the trade is carried
on Chinese ships, a c.i.f. value would overstate the foreign exchange costs
of imports.
