EDT) 1. Sialkot may now be in Indian hands. Indian spokesmen, who yesterday asserted that Indian troops had advanced to within two miles of that city, are now claiming that "our forces in the Jammu-Sialkot area have achieved their objectives." While this is unconfirmed, it is lent weight by the absence of comment on the Sialkot front in early morning Pakistani radio broadcasts. 2. The prospect of a Pakistani counterattack and further heavy fighting in this area is suggested by reports that Pakistan on 13 September was diverting tanks, ammunition and artillery from the Lahore front to Sialkot. The Pakistani Fifth Armored Brigade was said to be moving from Lahore toward Sialkot, to- gether with elements of the First Armored Division. 3. Indian sources today are also claiming to have broken up a large Pakistani armored thrust south of Lahore, after a two- day battle. 4. A moderately intensive Indian air raid on Peshawar in the early hours of this morning caused no American casualties, but bombs narrowly misled the residence of an American vice consul. Other bombs fell near a MAAG building and another Ameri- can residence. There were no reported bombs in the principal American resident area. The target of the Indian raid was Pakistani Air Force headquarters at Peshawar. Pakistan is calling the raid "an indiscriminate bombing" with no damage to air force installations. India, however, is claiming considerable damage. 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/06/ - P79T00472A001500010038-4 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/06/24: CIA-RDP79T00472AO01500010038-4 Next 2 Page(s) In Document Exempt Approved For Release 2004/06/24: CIA-RDP79T00472AO01500010038-4
