Figure 1 graphically illustrates those portions of the border area that are covered by photography and locates the areas described in this report. Inclement weather precludes an anlysis of many previously 1:cported areas in Primorskiy I.ray (cloud cover and other limitations of the photo- graphic quality are not depicted on Figure 1). The following items of interest were noted WAC 161 25X1 25X1 25X1 Biysk 14ilitary Complex, USSR (52-33N 085-13E Only two of the Biysk military complex: installations are covered 25X1 Biysk HQ 23rd Motorized. Rifle Division nc 25X1 A new multistory probable barracks building is under construction within the II 23rd MRI) area even y- w p tanks, seven probable amp ubious veiic es, an approximately 70 unident- ified vehicles are observed within this area. No significant changes are observed within the AL-6 barracks area. The following vehicles/pieces of equipment are observed: 57 probable tanks; 10 probable trucks; and 12 unidentified vehicles/pieces of equipment. WAG 201 Choybalsan, Mongolia (48-04N 114-30E Activit throughout the Choybalsan complex has increased since previous coverage A new secured tent camp has been constructed approximately one nm northwest of town. Approximately 400 cargo trucks, 46 rail s_ers,, 60 unidentified vehicles/pieces of equipment and a large amount of unidentified material are observed throughout the rea. Vyakhta Army Barracks AL-1. No significant changes are observed ,>thin the cloud-free portion of the main barracks area. Construction appears .c be continuing at a slow pace on the five vehicle storage buildings and five Luilding foundations (previously reported) in the v hicle/equipment storage ead maintenance area one nm east of the barracks arsa. Activity on the flat trajectory firing range aid in the tracked-vehicle aver-training area has increased however. this is probably.- .25X1 25X1 Approved For Releasfo WRt. lA-RDP79T00919A000100140001-6 25X1 Approve d For Release 210RO g UITA ' I The following vehicles/pieces of equipment are observed on this mission: 50 probable tanks; 100 trucks; 10 possible amphibious vehicles; 28 possible artillery pieces; 18 possible AAA pieces; and at least 200 unidentified vehicles/pieces of equipment. 25X1 25X1 WAC 202 Man-chou-1i, China/Zabaykalsk. USSR (49-35N 117-26E) level. Approximately 80 POL tank cars are observed adjacent to POL storage facility and approximately 250 additional rail cars throughout the rail complex. The Zabaykalsk rail yard, located side of the border, contains approximately 100 rail cars. WAC 286 Ulaan Baatar Military Activity. Mongolia (47-55N 106-55E) ted medium the NIan-chou-li are observed on the Soviet Military activity continues to increase on the east edge of the city 25X1 25X1 25X1 complex. A significant increase in the number of military-associated buildings, vehicles, and equipment has occurred since comparative coverage 25X1 I lof this area, was not of sufficient quality to a ow detailed compari son. There are now approximately 70 probable barracks, numerous storage/ support buildings, at least 50 Soviet-type tents, 10 probable vehicle/ equipment storage buildings, nine vehicle parks, and 10 new building foundations located throughout the area. Five of the vehicle parks appear 25X1 to be new since comparative coverage 1dditional items of interest observed within the area arE and a vehicle driver-training area.. A probable surface-to-surface cruise missile unit with probable SSCM transporter/launchers and support vehicles is deployed in a probable training configuration on the north edge of the military camp. Comparative 25X1 coverage 'ndicates that this unit was not present at that time. The following vehicles/pieces of equipment are observed within the installa- tion: four probable SSCM transporter/launchers with 25 support vehicles, 11 probable tanks, 18 probable SA-2 launchers (12 with prime movers), 18 probable SA-2 transporters, six possible SA-2 cannister transporters, four truck- mounted cranes, more than 400 trucks of various sizes, seven low bed trailers, 46 possible BTR-60P APCs, and approximately 250 unidentified pieces of equipment. Several rows of unidentified material are stacked adjacent to a rail transshipment stied and additional unidentified material is observed in other parts of the rail yard. The previously reported new rail transshipment yard appears to be relatively inactive on this mission with only do Chinese rail cars and four cranes observed. Approximately 250 pieces of rolling stock are observed :tirougliout the entire complex with approximately 5) of these located on the soviet rail system. ,AC 329 Airfield Construction, Wen-su, China 41-15N )80-18F Partial coverage of this installation reveals that the airfield is in ..a. late stage of construction. Construction is coniinuing on the parking aprons, taxiway, and a portion of the runway. A nimber of probable construc- tion support buildings and foundations for probabl airfield operations support buildings are observed adjacent to the tax_way.
