PHOTOGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE REPORT DATE June 1965 SEARCH FOR GUIDED MISSLLEINUCLEAR ENERGY-ACTIVITY CHANG-CHIH, CHINA CIA/PI R-1015165 Declass Review by NIMA/DOD yep--r~e~c~ SEARCH FOR GUIDED MISSILE/NUCLEAR ENERGY ACTIVITY TOP SECRET CIA, PHOTOGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE DIVISION CIA/PIR-1015/65 This report is one of several dealing with numerous locations in China being searched for guided missile or nuclear energy activity. Collateral information has reported the appearance of military engineer units in these areas. This report presents the results of a search in the area of Chang-Chih. Chang-Chih 36-ION 113-06E Chang-Chih, a relatively small city, is?located 260 nautical miles (nm) southwest of Pei-Ping, China and 100 nm south of Tai-Yuan. This city is the northern terminus of a railroad that leads south for approximately 100 nm to join the major railroad system in the vicinity of Cheng-chou (34-45N 113-40E). There is no apparent construction activity in the vicinity of Chang-Chih that has any missile or nuclear energy significance. (Figures l,, 2 and 3) The following items of intelligence interest were noted in this search 1. Chang-Chin Arsenals - Two large rail-served arsenals are located on the southern outskirts of' Chang-Chih. Each of these arsenals has from 7-10 large, multi-story fabricating and assembly buildings, several shops, and nu:..ercus barrack: and workers hou_ ing. (Figures 4 and' 5) 2. Chang-Chih Iron and Steel Plant - A medium sized iron and steel plant is located eleven. rm ne'rth-northwest of Chang-Chih. (Figure 6) 3. Chang-Chih Thermal Power Plant - Located ter nr north of Chang- Chih, this large modern thermal power plant. reportedly was constructed in 1961. (Figurer 7) 4. Chang-Chih Airfield - This minor civil airfield, located two nm , northeast of the city, has a h,000 foot sod runway and very limited facilities. (Figure 8) - No mi ile or nuclear energy association can be related to the above ir.stallatiot,, however their presence could acecunt for the appearance of military engineer units in the area cf' Chang-Chih. ?
