SUBJECT Crime Against Naming Covert
Washington, D.C.
PAT MCMURRAY: The President went to CIA Headquarters in
Langley, Virginia for the first time today. He signed a bill
that would make it a crime to name a covert agent. The President
spoke to about 1500 employees out on the agency lawn.
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN: I've come here today to say to
you what the vast majority of Americans would say if they had
this opportunity to stand here before you. We're grateful to
you. We thank you. We're proud of you.
MCMURRAY: Mr. Reagan met separately with the undercover
agents. Reporters were not allowed at that meeting.
The bill the President signed today would punish anyone
who disclosed the name of a secret agent with up to ten years in
prison or a $50,000 fine.
