MEMORANDUM FOR: DCI
Ftyz WS7AT
SUBJECT : History of the Organizational Location of the History Staff
1. The History Staff was:
--Established in 1952 under what is now the Office of Political
Affairs.
--Transferred in 1963 to the Executive Director-Comptroller.
--Transferred from Executive Director-Comptroller to what is now
the DDA in 1975.
2. In the event a Historical Staff is placed in the DCI area, it is
imortant that he work closely with the Executive Secretary in order to:
--Have access to documents or the leads we can provide to same for
historical purposes.
--Participate with the Executive Secretary in identifying highly
sensitive material which should be reviewed after X amount of
time. (Note: Today's "Eyes Only/Burn Before Reading" material
becomes critical to the historian and less sensitive over a period.
of time. A review system must be developed to obtain the necessary
release for inclusion in any chronicle.)
--The DCI and DDCI are usually too preoccupied to give Chief/Historical
Staff the periodic attention he deserves. The Executive Secretary's
role was to keep them generally informed of the rhythm and substance
of current events that should be indexed for future historical
treatment.
