Monument in Punta Arenas to Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer who organized the Spanish expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, which resulted in the first circumnavigation of the Earth. Overcoming storms and mutinies, the expedition managed to pass the Strait of Magellan (named after the navigator) to become the first explorers to cross from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.
