Gelada monkeys are a protected species, living in large herds in the towering Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia. With falsetto cries, explosive barks, and soft grunts, geladas have one of the most varied vocal repertoires of all the primates. Geladas are visually striking, with burning eyes and leathery complexions. Male geladas are the size of large dogs, weighing 23-27 kg (50-60 lbs). Females are about half as big.
