Notre Dame de Paris is one of the most famous Gothic cathedrals in the world. Construction began in 1160 over the ruins of two earlier churches and was completed in 1250; additions were added over the subsequent century. Over time, Notre Dame underwent numerous restorations to counter centuries of deterioration and destruction. During a restoration campaign in 2019, a fire broke out in the attic and the blaze destroyed most of the roof, the famous spire, and some of the rib vaulting. Reconstruction is currently underway.
