The Latona Fountain, located in the center of the garden at the Palace de Versailles, is inspired by the myth of Latona, mother of Apollo and Diana, and her encounter with the peasants of Lycia. Insulted by the peasants, she punished them by changing them into frogs. Latona is pictured at the top of fountain with the frogs at the bottom. This tale from Apollo’s childhood appealed to Louis XIV since he had chosen the sun god as his emblem.
